Battlefield Labs is scheduled to unveil the multiplayer for Battlefield 6 on July 31 officially, and ahead of the unveiling, 2 minutes of gameplay footage have been posted to X.
The footage is among the other small clips that have surfaced throughout Battlefield Labs' playtests of Battlefield 6, but this time, we have a lengthy video to dive into. The Battlefield franchise began to experience a steady decline after the release of Battlefield 3, with EA releasing constant misses and players leaving the game over small changes. Now, with Battlefield 6 on the horizon, many longtime fans of the franchise are excited to see if that Battlefield feel has been reanimated in Battlefield 6. Judging by the gameplay, it has, but it also hasn't.
The gameplay shows intense gunplay in what appears to be a small city map, with extremely tight corners, high buildings, and fast movement. These aren't the hallmarks of classic Battlefield, which was known for its wide-open maps and lengthy skirmishes. At least on this map, and I really hope there is some variance in map size, it appears Battlefield 6 is leaning more toward an arcade experience akin to Call of Duty.
However, you can't destroy half of a building in Call of Duty with a tank you have just picked up, nor can you drag your downed teammates to safety for a quick revive. Both of which are very "Battlefield" and are differentiating factors when comparing the two titles.
The fast movement and gunplay do make this gameplay look similar to Call of Duty, but what separates it is the intense destruction caused by the various vehicles and heavy weaponry. This does look great in Battlefield 6, and does perk my interest, being a longtime fan of the series. I really hope this quick gunplay can be attributed to the map being small, and that this is only one of the many maps players will be able to experience in the upcoming Open Beta.
Long-time Battlefield fans will want to jump into those wide open spaces where strategy and vehicle play become much more valuable than being able to click on your opponent's head before they click on yours. Judging from this gameplay, it appears Battlefield 6 is a combination of Battlefield 3 & 4, but let's hope it leans more to the former.
Hopefully, we will get to see more at the multiplayer unveiling on July 31, but for now, I remain cautiously optimistic about Battlefield 6, as what I've seen has both excited and concerned me.
