TL;DR: Bungie has delayed Marathon's release to enhance gameplay challenge, rewards, visual fidelity, and social features. The decision follows negative Alpha feedback and controversy over stolen artist designs, which impacted developer morale and forced a complete overhaul of the game's marketing strategy and release roadmap.

Bungie has announced it will be delaying the release of Marathon to focus on several aspects of the game, including making it more challenging, rewarding, increasing visual fidelity, and adding more social experiences.

This official delay by Bungie comes on the heels of the developer being caught in the middle of a negative press spiral, with the first problem being that Alpha play tests of the game generated poor player feedback, and the developer admitting to stealing artist designs for Marathon assets. The latter of the two really caused the sentiment around Marathon to be negative, with reports stating morale at the developer dropped to an all-time low following the controversy.

Additionally, following the negative response from the Alpha play tests and the artist debacle, reports stated the entire marketing plan for the game had to be reworked, along with the roadmap to release. Moreover, it was reported at the end of May that a delay was being discussed between Bungie and Sony executives, as neither wanted to release the game in what was described as a "now actively hostile environment."

Well, that potential delay has now been set in stone with Bungie taking to its website to announce Marathon has been delayed indefinitely from its September 23 release date, which comes only days after Sony said Marathon would be released in Fiscal Year 2025, which is before March 2026. That release window doesn't seem to be set in stone, as Bungie doesn't make any mention of it in its announcement. So, what is going to change with Marathon throughout its delay?

Some of our immediate focus areas will be:

  • Upping the Survival Game
  • More challenging and engaging AI encounters
  • More rewarding runs, with new types of loot and dynamic events
  • Making combat more tense and strategic
  • Doubling down on the Marathon Universe
  • Increased visual fidelity
  • More narrative and environmental storytelling to discover and interact with
  • A darker tone that delivers on the themes of the original trilogy
  • Adding more social experiences
  • A better player experience for solo/duos
  • Prox chat, so social stories can come to life

Bungie writes that it will be providing an update on the progress it has made on Marathon development "this fall," alongside a new release date.
