TL;DR: Sony maintains its annual release strategy despite industry challenges, committing to at least one major singleplayer game yearly to strengthen the PlayStation ecosystem. This year features two AAA titles, Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei, with future plans including Wolverine and live service game investments for sustained engagement and profitability.

Sony keeps its annual release cadence even as the games industry contracts amidst economic volatility.

It's tough to release new products in a market where cost-cutting is prevalent, layoffs are abundant, and project cancellations are frequent. Software is the beating heart of the games market, and Sony for its part aims to continue delivering consistent yearly game releases to help bolster the PlayStation ecosystem with marquee content.

In a recent corporate interview, PlayStation boss Hermen Hulst confirmed that the game plan is still to have at least one major singleplayer game launch every year. When the games come out is crucial and Sony aims to be strategic with launch timing. For instance, one of this year's annual PlayStation games, Ghost of Yotei, will release in October, which was around the same time GTA 6 was expected to release before Rockstar delayed it to May 2026.

This year will actually see two major AAA releases from PlayStation: Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei. Sony confirms that upcoming PS5 games like Wolverine and Intergalactic are part of future release timelines.

Hulst ultimately reiterates a similar plan that Sony had previously announced, and this new plan does include more spending on live service games:

Hermen Hulst, Studio Business Group CEO at Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE):

For the studio business, I'd say we're focused on quality, timely delivery, engagement, and profitability--and of course monetization as well.

In singleplayer, we're focused on consistently delivering at least one tentpole title per year, at the right time, at the right quality level that players come to expect from PlayStation Studios.

In live services, we're focused on building a recurring base of live service titles that drive ongoing engagement and monetization as achieved by our releases to date.

And then finally, we'll continue to grow our franchises through a very thoughtful release cadence and investment in transmedia properties.
