TL;DR: Nintendo officially confirmed the Switch 2 supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) only in handheld mode, not while docked. Despite earlier website claims, VRR on TVs is unsupported due to hardware limitations. The handheld display's 120Hz panel enables VRR, enhanced by NVIDIA G-Sync technology for smoother gaming performance.

The Switch 2 will not support Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) while docked, Nintendo has officially confirmed.

A bit ago, Nintendo changed the Switch 2's website to remove any mention of Variable Refresh Rate support on TVs. Previously, Nintendo had expressed that the Switch 2 would support VRR while connected to a compatible TV, similar to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Now the company has issued and official statement, confirming once and for all that the Switch 2 only supports VRR in handheld mode: "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error," a rep told Nintendo Life.

This makes sense, considering the Switch 2's display panel supports up to 120Hz refresh rates (or 120FPS gaming), meaning it can better take advantage of VRR feature sets. But TVs are a different story, and consumers need a special display in order to break past the 60FPS barrier. As Sony noted in late 2024, only 1 in 10 PlayStation 5 owners have a variable refresh display.

Interestingly enough, the HDMI switch in the Switch 2's dock, the Realtek RTD2175N-CG DisplayPort v1.4 to HDMI 2.1 protocol converter, may be a customized version of the RTD2173, a chip that supports up to 8K 60Hz.

There was a clue for this development: NVIDIA had also confirmed the device would support VRR in handheld mode, but never mentioned anything about VRR in docked.

NVIDIA had also confirmed the Switch 2's VRR feature set would be made possible by G-Sync tech.
