No, AMD didn't just drop the price of Radeon RX Vega 56

Anthony Garreffa | Video Cards & GPUs | Feb 21, 2019 6:43 PM CST

NVIDIA is expected to drop another Turing hammer on AMD with the impending release of the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, and then this morning news broke of AMD reportedly dropped the price of its Radeon RX Vega 56 to $279 to get ahead of the GTX 1660 Ti.

No, AMD didn't just drop the price of Radeon RX Vega 56

Yeah well, that's not the case. Excited press were a little excited about the price as it was looked at in a way that AMD was dropping the price of the RX Vega 56 to $279, but it was however Newegg that had a "killer deal" for the Radeon RX Vega 56. Newegg very temporarily dropped the price of the Radeon RX Vega 56 to $279, and just $279 after a mail-in rebate. It sold out incredibly quick.

I checked Amazon at the time of writing and the Radeon RX Vega 56 can be found starting at $400-$500, a much higher price than the tantalizing prospects of securing the card for just $250 after the MIR.

343i crunched hard for Halo 4 and Halo 5

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 21, 2019 4:40 PM CST

After crunching for two games in a row, 343i will take Halo: Infinite's development more slowly as it prepares a new engine and toolset pipeline.

343i crunched hard for Halo 4 and Halo 5

In a recent interview with USGamer, 343 Industries head Bonnie Ross affirmed the studio's first two Halo games took a toll on its team. Halo 4 demanded immense crunch as 343i had to prove itself worth of the franchise and keep the Halo flame going with new content. Artists and designers were hit hardest by this crunch, as they had to feed assets and content into a complex engine. But after Halo 4, Ross promised the team things would be easier with the next game. More tools would be in place to expedite the process.

That didn't happen, and 343i was hit with even more crunch to ship Halo 5. The project just kept getting bigger and bigger despite missing modes like Firefight at launch; the game was a technical achievement given the then-current Xbox One's limited hardware. Finally having made two sequels in a row with expanded post-release content rollouts, the team was finally ready for that easier road Ross promised.

Reggie Fils-Aime is retiring as President of Nintendo of America, and Bowser is taking over. No...not that Bowser. Company exec Doug Bowser.

Bowser takes over Nintendo of America

Nintendo today announced that Reggie Fils-Aime, the beloved hypeman and leader who gave us the legendary phrase "My body is ready!", is stepping down as president of its American branch. Following his 15 years of strong leadership, Fils-Aime will step down shortly after Nintendo starts its new fiscal year in April.

"Nintendo owns a part of my heart forever," Fils-Aime said in the press release. "It's a part that is filled with gratitude - for the incredibly talented people I've worked with, for the opportunity to represent such a wonderful brand, and most of all, to feel like a member of the world's most positive and enduring gamer community. As I look forward to departing in both good health and good humor, this is not 'game over' for me, but instead 'leveling up' to more time with my wife, family and friends."

Top 10 Twilight Zone episodes

Derek Strickland | Celebrities & Entertainment | Feb 21, 2019 2:52 PM CST

With Jordan Peele's new Twilight Zone reboot on the way, we thought it pertinent to drudge up our top 10 favorite episodes of the original 1960's series for your perusal.

Top 10 Twilight Zone episodes

The Twilight Zone is my favorite anthology series. It's a show that opens new doorways in your mind, conjuring all kinds of strange ideas and possibilities that simply weren't there before. You feel like a changed person after you watch a good Twilight Zone episode, as if you can now see the world a little bit differently. The following 10 episodes of the original 1960s series should bring that sense of awe and mystery the series is known for, and you can check them out on Hulu or Netflix.

Our list is a bit obscure, though. It doesn't include iconic (but not necessarily great) episodes like Shatner's Nightmare at 20,000 Feet or Burgess Meredith's immortalized broken glasses of Time Enough At Last. You won't find the one about the neat little stopwatch that stops time, or the camera that can predict the future. No, we dug a bit deeper to unearth some of the really interesting and oft-unknown gems the show has to offer. There's lots of twists and turns in these ones, so be forewarned!

New Twilight Zone trailer is full of classic throwbacks

Derek Strickland | Celebrities & Entertainment | Feb 21, 2019 2:10 PM CST

It'd be hard to make a Twilight Zone reboot or continuation without acknowledging Rod Serling's original parables of weirdness. I'm happy to see CBS has peppered its new Twilight Zone series with lots of little nods to the black-and-white anthology of yore.

New Twilight Zone trailer is full of classic throwbacks

Every 20 years or so The Twilight Zone gets brought back. Many remember the original 1960's version narrated by Rod Serling, but there's actually three different series: an 80's reboot (which is quite excellent) and 2000's series (which 80% miss and 20% hit). Now in 2019, almost 20 years after the last resurrection, a fourth is coming--and it's coming soon. CBS placed a new Twilight Zone reboot in Jordan Peele's hands to help create little slices of macabre morality. The latest in Twilight Zone's legacy will begin on April 1, 2019, CBS today announced with new footage.

The latest trailer has a ton of little Easter eggs that Twilight Zone fans will recognize immediately. The hilarious-now but scary-for-its-time monster that espoused Shatner's famous line "there's...something on the wing...some...thing!" in Nightmare at 20,000 Feet can be seen washed up on a beach shore.

Apex Legends wall running, Titan mechs possibly on the way

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 21, 2019 10:53 AM CST

Dataminers have scoured the new Apex Legends update for tidbits, uncovering some interesting new modes and the possible return of parkour mechanics and titan mech suits.

Apex Legends wall running, Titan mechs possibly on the way

Respawn's massively popular 60-player battle royale FPS sensation may become a lot more like its forebear Titanfall. According to info found by dataminers in Apex Legends' new update, the game is getting a new Classic mode that should unleash fresh havoc and bring back Titanfall-esque FPS action. Classic seems to include some familiar elements like double-jump thrusting via jumpkit items and Titanfall's beloved wall-running.

Some of the files also mention titans, hinting that mechs will return at some point. Respawn is likely testing the mechanics in a new developer-only mode and if hulking titan mechs do smash the scene, they should do so in a special gametype.

OVERKILL's The Walking Dead pre-order refunded, NOT canceled

Back in 2018 we saw the epic failure of OVERKILL's The Walking Dead, with a complete financial loss due to the games lackluster quality in terms of numerous bugs, clunkiness and just an overall disappointing experience. Since the title has only been released on the PC, many console fans are still waiting to receive their pre-orders. 505 Games, the other publisher to the OVERKILL's The Walking Dead has come out on their official Twitter to announce that the console version of the game is NOT canceled despite the rampant rumors and has instead just been delayed. Valve abandon ALL non-gaming related video content on Steam

Jak Connor | Gaming | Feb 21, 2019 2:00 AM CST

Valve have realized the grim truth of their video content service on Steam and now the company has now made an official statement saying their are planning to "refocus" what content is seen on their service.

Valve abandon ALL non-gaming related video content on Steam

In a brand new statement onto the Steam blog, Valve have addressed the video content side of their service. While the original thought behind the Video section was to expand Steams horizons into movies, documentaries etc, the idea wasn't well-received by the community. According to the blog post by Valve, after reviewing the traffic for what users were watching in the video section it became clear to them that they needed to "refocus" their efforts into what content is seen.

The decision that was finalized by Valve was that "over the coming weeks a number of non-gaming videos will be retired and will no longer be available for purchase." The content that will be seen in the video section will now be "directly related to gaming or, is accessory content for games or software sold on Steam." Ultimately Valve have "retired the Video section of the Steam Store menu with an expectation that video content is discovered via the associated game or software store page, or through search, user tags, recommendations, etc." It should be noted that all previously purchased video content will still be available to watch through Steam after the discontinuing.
