TL;DR: KyTyPS5 has progressed from showing Marvel's Wolverine's menu to entering the game, but performance remains far from playable. Its rapid development is drawing attention as Sony pulls back from PC releases and gamers look to emulation amid uncertainty over GTA 6's PC launch.

PlayStation 5 emulation on PC is picking up steam, with new milestones reached almost daily. Earlier this week, we reported that PS5 emulator KyTyPS5 booted Marvel's Wolverine on PC and reached the menu screen. Granted, trying to do anything but watch the menu render at 2 FPS on a GeForce RTX 5090 and a Ryzen 7 7800X3D-powered rig would crash the game, but it's an impressive milestone for what is still a brand-new first-party AAA PlayStation game.

Here we are just a few days later, and now KyTyPS5 can actually get into the game proper, though nowhere near playable. In fact, running on what looks to be a GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU, it's basically a slideshow. However, as has been the case with several high-profile PS5 games KyTyPS5 has made quick progress on, it's only a matter of time before we see the game running on a PC at 20 FPS, 30 FPS, and then 60 FPS.

First-party platformer Astro Bot is a great example: a visually intensive, fast-paced title that struggled to maintain 20 FPS in menus and gameplay. Now, it can hit up to 60 FPS in some sections while also resolving graphical issues. Likewise, Demon's Souls Remake now runs at 120 FPS with NVIDIA's DLSS Multi Frame Generation on a GeForce RTX 5090. Basically, KyTyPS5 development is progressing at an impressive rate, and the wider PC gaming community is following it closely for good reason.

Well, two reasons. The first is Sony exiting the PC gaming market, with the studio no longer planning to bring any of its major first-party single-player games to platforms like Steam. This means no Astro Bot, no Ghost of Yotei, and no Marvel's Wolverine. For PC gamers who jumped into games like Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, and Marvel's Spider-Man, Sony's decision was disappointing. The second reason is, well, GTA. With Grand Theft Auto 6 a console exclusive until Rockstar confirms a PC release date, many PC gamers have been exploring emulation to play the game.

From TweakTown's coverage of this story.

What compatibility or stability issues still prevent Marvel's Wolverine from being playable through KyTyPS5?

KyTyPS5 can now get Marvel's Wolverine into the game, but performance is still described as a slideshow on what appears to be a GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU. In the earlier menu-only test, the menu rendered at about 2 FPS, and trying to do anything else crashed the game.

What graphics fixes and performance improvements has KyTyPS5 brought to Astro Bot?

KyTyPS5 has resolved some graphical issues in Astro Bot, though the specific fixes are not identified. Performance has improved from struggling to maintain 20 FPS in menus and gameplay to reaching up to 60 FPS in some sections.

How does NVIDIA DLSS Multi Frame Generation affect Demon's Souls Remake when emulated with KyTyPS5?

Demon's Souls Remake runs at 120 FPS with NVIDIA DLSS Multi Frame Generation when emulated through KyTyPS5 on a GeForce RTX 5090. No frame rate without Multi Frame Generation is given, so its specific performance gain is unclear.

What has Sony said about bringing its first-party single-player games to PC?

Sony is no longer planning to bring its major first-party single-player games to PC platforms such as Steam. "Sony seems to confirm singleplayer first-party PlayStation games will remain console exclusive" reports that PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino strongly indicated new games of that kind will remain exclusive to PlayStation consoles.

Especially in the current climate, when console prices are rising due to the DRAM crisis rather than falling. In fact, with the rapid development and pace of KyTyPS5 improvements, many hope the emulator will be "ready" for GTA 6 when it launches in November. Time will tell, and in the meantime we'll keep you posted on additional, notable milestones like this.
