TL;DR: Reports show Microsoft may be testing dynamic, personalized discounts on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate-offers around $16-$20/month for 12 months appeared for some users, seemingly targeted at lapsed or intermittent subscribers. Prices vary by account, aren't guaranteed, and Microsoft hasn't disclosed selection criteria or geographic limits.

We are not exactly new to dynamic pricing. The most recent example would be Sony testing dynamic pricing on the PlayStation Store, with game prices adjusted based on user data like playtime and location. However, we have never really seen Microsoft use it for Xbox Game Pass. That seems to be changing, at least according to reports in a Reddit thread.

In a photo uploaded to the platform, one user shared the subscription screen showing Xbox Game Pass Ultimate discounted from the usual $22.99 to $16.09 a month, locked in for an entire year unless the user cancels early. "Been looking for an annual subscription for years," the poster wrote. "$16.09 a month for one year Ultimate. I'll take it."

Other users have reported similar experiences, with u/Much_Comfortable_378 offered around $18 per month for twelve months and u/modemman11 receiving an offer of $20. The exact price differs per person, and there is no guarantee you will see a special offer at all, even after cancelling. In fact, if you head to the Xbox website right now, chances are you'll likely see the standard $22.99 rate.

As for the secret to getting the offer, Reddit users have a few theories. The original poster used Game Pass on and off for nearly two years, frequently pausing and resubscribing rather than committing to an annual plan, and their most recent subscription expired about a month before the discount appeared.

Others said the reduced rate showed up on a secondary account when logging into their Xbox console, while their main account never received anything. "You won't see any kind of reduced monthly offer while subbed," someone noted in a separate thread.

We cannot say for certain what the criteria are. Still, a good guess would be that Microsoft is experimenting with dynamic or personalised pricing to win back lapsed subscribers, tracking usage patterns and offering discounts to users who have shown a habit of avoiding unnecessary spending and maximising value. In the original poster's case, a 30% discount was enough to close the deal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Open a question for an answer from TweakTown's coverage of this news, or ask your own below.

Question #1

How can Xbox Game Pass subscribers check whether they’ve been targeted for one of these discounted offers?

They can check their Xbox console while signed in, since some users said the reduced offer appeared on a secondary account there even when the main account did not. The offer may also show up on the subscription screen, but if they are already subscribed they reportedly may not see the reduced monthly deal. If nothing appears on the Xbox website or console, there is no guarantee a special offer was targeted to them.
Question #2

Does the discounted Xbox Game Pass Ultimate price lock in for the full 12 months if you keep the subscription active?

Question #3

Are these Game Pass discounts only showing up for lapsed subscribers, or can current subscribers receive them too?

Question #4

What subscription patterns seem to trigger the lower Game Pass pricing, based on the reports so far?

While Microsoft did slash Xbox Game Pass pricing earlier this year, keeping a discount of up to $7 a month exclusive to former subscribers while long-term loyal ones pay full price will raise some eyebrows. That said, Microsoft has not confirmed how it selects these offers or whether they extend beyond the US.
