Doom running on anything and everything has been a running joke for a while, and now Doom has found another unexpected host. Developer Bas Lichtjaar, known online as lauris-nl, has built a playable port of the 1993 classic for the Canon EOS 550D, a 16-year-old entry-level DSLR also sold as the Rebel T2i and EOS Kiss X4.
The port runs through Magic Lantern, an open-source firmware add-on for Canon cameras that's been around since 2009 and normally adds things like RAW video recording and expanded ISO ranges.
The camera's own hardware handles everything. Its DIGIC 4 processor runs the game, while the directional buttons control movement, the SET button fires, PLAY opens doors, and the rear wheel switches weapons. Zoom buttons double as run and strafe controls when held. There's even sound, mixing Doom's original effects with synthesized music through a 48KHz mono output using the camera's built-in speaker.
An optional display mode renders the game at 360x240 before scaling each pixel up to a 2x2 block on the 550D's 720x480 screen, which keeps the game readable on the small display. The current release, Doom550D v0.4.1, also supports save and load functionality along with multiple WAD files.

There's a catch here if you want to try it yourself, however. The build only works on the Canon EOS 550D running firmware version 1.0.9, and Lichtjaar is explicit that it shouldn't be installed on any other camera model or firmware revision. Installing it elsewhere risks bricking the hardware, since the module relies on specific memory addresses that Magic Lantern extracted from that exact firmware build.
This isn't new territory for Doom, which has become the unofficial benchmark for "can this run a 30-year-old shooter." We have previously covered Doom running entirely through DNS text records, and even Doom playable on a single keyboard keycap. A camera from 2010 fits right into that tradition.

Anyone with a compatible 550D can try it themselves, with proper caution. The GitHub release includes the Magic Lantern build and the Doom module, though users need to supply their own legally obtained WAD files, as the repository doesn't include any Doom game data.
