Introduction & Specification Details and Close-up
PC gamers are familiar with PowerColor primarily as a company that creates a range of fantastic Radeon GPU options. With the arrival of the RDNA 4 generation, the company has introduced new and revamped Red Devil and Hellhound designs for the Radeon RX 9070 Series, which have proven to be some of the most popular options. In fact, until recently, GPUs, or graphics cards, have been the primary focus of the company, so it's always great to see a respected brand branch out into unfamiliar territory like this, which brings us to this review of the new PowerColor ALPHYN AH10 Wireless Gaming Headset.
A quick look at the PowerColor ALPHYN AH10
Okay, wireless audio is entirely different than GPUs or graphics cards, meaning success is not guaranteed. Just because you're good at creating one thing doesn't mean this translates to something else. The good news is that after using the PowerColor ALPHYN AH10 Wireless Gaming Headset for a few weeks, it's become clear that PowerColor has achieved what it set out to do - create an affordable wireless audio solution for PC gamers, designed to keep you immersed while gaming.
As with all wireless gaming headsets, the price point often dictates our approach when reviewing a product. The PowerColor ALPHYN AH10's $100 price tag means it won't deliver audiophile-grade sound or be best-in-class in every aspect. It also means that some concessions will likely be made to keep costs down, such as the absence of Bluetooth. Ultimately, the same things you want to see still apply, regardless of the price - comfort, sound quality, plug-and-play ease of use, and clear, audible voice capabilities. The PowerColor ALPHYN AH10 certainly delivers in a few key areas, with one of its secret weapons being the integration of DTS Headphone:X 7.1 surround sound in Windows.

Design & Software Support
Design
Although the PowerColor ALPHYN AH10 sits on the more affordable side of the wireless headset spectrum, the build quality and overall physical design feel premium in many ways. Sporting the popular aviator look with metal hinges, a visible coiled wire, and leatherette-covered cushioning on the oval cups and metal headband, it's a minimal modern and gamer-friendly design. Outside of the metal headband and PowerColor logo on the cups, the all-black look extends to the retractable microphone and the surprise addition of a soft and high-quality carry/storage bag for the headset.

Weighing 326 grams, the evenly distributed weight and soft cushions on the cups and headband make it an immediately comfortable headset. On the left side are on-ear controls, including a volume dial, a dedicated microphone mute button, and a power button that switches between three in-built gaming, music, and theater modes presets. Here, you'll also find a 3.5mm connection for connecting to a wide range of devices, with the USB-C charging port in the right earcup.
The 30 or so hours of battery life are decent and average for a wireless gaming headset in this price range. However, the PowerColor ALPHYN AH10 doesn't seem to support play-and-charge, as when you connect the USB cable to charge, the headset effectively turns off to enter a sleep-and-charge state. And without a battery indicator in PowerColor's software (or on the device), those "drained battery" moments are a little frustrating.

The microphone isn't detachable but retractable, so that's an acceptable compromise. On the plus side, an optional foam filter for the microphone acts as a pop filter. As for the main audio, the PowerColor ALPHYN AH10 Wireless Gaming Headset features powerful 50mm drivers that deliver a warm and detailed out-of-the-box sound with decent low-end and mid-range response. Even though the sound profile is "warm," the highs are crisp enough to deliver that impact you want when gaming or listening to music.
Software Support
With a 3.5mm connection and three onboard sound profiles that suit most audio needs, the PowerColor ALPHYN AH10 Wireless Gaming Headset is versatile. However, it makes the most sense when connected to a Windows PC. Here, you can use PowerColor's Keystone application for customization, which uses the DTS Headphone:X 7.1 surround sound API for all tweaking. Your tools and options are pretty limited, but you can adjust the sound as needed here.

In addition to choosing between four DTS Surround profiles and presets for Gaming, Music, Theater, and Voice, there are three Custom profiles where you can store and name your own presets. The good news is that DTS Headphone:X 7.1 surround sound is quite subtle in how it creates depth and spatial awareness, so enabling this to adjust a 10-band equalizer isn't a deal-breaker. The equalizer is pretty basic, too, with single dB adjustments for each band.

That pretty much covers everything for PowerColor's Keystone app. There are no microphone controls for gain, presets, or software-based noise reduction, which is a shame because the microphone pick-up is relatively low compared to most other headsets we've reviewed. The app also doesn't offer a battery-life indicator, which is another missing thing. At least the UI is clean and straightforward, with the app itself being relatively lightweight regarding the resources it uses.
Performance & Microphone Quality
Performance
Most of our PowerColor ALPHYN AH10 testing was conducted on PC, with DTS Headphone:X enabled. The main games we used to gauge audio quality, clarity, and depth were Diablo 4, DOOM Eternal, Horizon Forbidden West, and Assassin's Creed Shadows (which feature some excellent sound design when exploring the open world). Overall, the PowerColor ALPHYN AH10 performs well, with DTS providing some great channel separation so sounds don't feel close or boxed in. Voices and soundtracks come through clearly, too, even when firing off weapons/abilities or watching something explode.

The low end is there but not overly so, and the overall warm sound profile lacks the sharpness and crispiness that some seek. On the plus side, the warm sound profile is great for listening to music, as you get a lot of the mid-range nuance here, though it's not quite up there with premium audio options. The fast-paced action of both Diablo 4 and DOOM Eternal was an excellent test for the PowerColor ALPHYN AH10, which does a decent job handling the chaos and punchiness of enemies getting hit while ensuring that audio cues and other sound effects come through clearly. With DTS Headphone:X disabled or connecting to a console or mobile device via the 3.5mm connection, the out-of-the-box sound you get from the three presets does lack some depth - with the quality being good enough or what you'd expect from the price point.
Microphone Quality
Testing in various locations, the PowerColor ALPHYN AH10's microphone is quiet - a little strange. Outside of artificially boosting the gain in apps or software, the default voice pick-up is noticeably softer than most gaming headsets, with the sound quality being pretty standard. There's no distortion, but it's far from being broadcast quality. It's not unexpected, as it's perfectly fine for an in-game chat or jumping into Discord. A serviceable, albeit quiet, microphone experience.
Final Thoughts
PowerColor is dipping its toes into gaming hardware that isn't a GPU, and the PowerColor ALPHYN AH10 Wireless Gaming Headset offers excellent value when used for PC gaming. The warm and detailed sound you get benefits from including DTS surround, which is one of the best virtual surround solutions, as it's primarily subtle and doesn't mess with the default sound. The build quality has a premium feel, and it's the sort of headset you can comfortably wear for hours, whether gaming or listening to music or a podcast. The additional 3.5mm connection also offers a wired option for connecting to various consoles and other devices.

In keeping the price point to $100, PowerColor has focused on ensuring that its first gaming headset offers great sound, decent chat quality, and comfort - which means you miss out on things like Bluetooth support and more in-depth control over the sound and some of its features. Is there room for improvement? Indeed, the microphone pick-up is soft, and the software support is pretty basic. Also, being unable to charge while you're still connected to the dongle feels like an oversight - especially when there's no way to tell how much battery life is left. Ultimately, if you're a PC gamer with or without a PowerColor GPU and looking for a great value wireless gaming headset - the PowerColor ALPHYN AH10 delivers.
