TL;DR: KyTyPS5 has progressed from booting GTA 5 menus to running the North Yankton prologue in-game at ~40-60 FPS with visual instability on a Ryzen 9 9950X3D/RX 79000XT, suggesting rapid PS5 emulation advances that could potentially allow PS5 versions like GTA 6 to boot on PC before Rockstar's official PC release.

After just one month, the PS5 emulator known as KyTyPS5 has been spotted successfully running Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 5, indicating significant progress in getting PS5 games unofficially working on PC.

Footage highlighted on X by eXtas1s shows Grand Theft Auto 5 running the North Yankton prologue mission, and the player progressing through the mission as per normal, albeit with considerable graphical concessions. Assets, lighting, and other graphical elements are extremely unstable, flickering in and out of view. However, the game runs relatively stably, with gameplay pulling between 40 and 60FPS through the KyTyPS5 emulator.

The original footage was posted by BrutalSam, who captured the gameplay on a system equipped with an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Radeon RX 79000XT. What makes this demonstration particularly interesting is that, back in July, I reported the KyTyPS5 emulator had only managed to boot GTA 5 to its main menu and settings, as the campaign was completely inaccessible. Now, less than two months later, we have a "playable" version that renders 3D gameplay up to 60FPS.

Now, that doesn't mean the PS5 version of GTA 5 on PC is going to be playable start to finish soon, as there is clearly still quite a lot of work to do. What it does instead mean is that developers working on the emulator have made rapid improvements in deciphering the PS5 memory, graphics, and system. Think of it like this. In less than two months, developers went from menus to 60FPS gameplay.

What does that mean for Grand Theft Auto 6 on PC? Rockstar is expected to launch the PC version of GTA 6 about a year after the console release, which would put it around November 2027 or early 2028. But if the KyTyPS5 emulator keeps improving at its current pace, developers may get the PS5 version of GTA 6 booting on PC before Rockstar's native PC release debuts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Open a question for an answer from TweakTown's coverage of this news, or ask your own below.

Question #1

How well is GTA 5 actually playable on KyTyPS5 right now beyond the North Yankton prologue?

Right now, there is no evidence here that GTA 5 is playable beyond the North Yankton prologue on KyTyPS5. The footage shown only reaches that mission, and while gameplay appears relatively stable at around 40 to 60 FPS, the visuals are still very unstable with assets and lighting flickering in and out. It is described as a "playable" version of the game, but not as something ready to be played start to finish.
Question #2

What hardware did BrutalSam use to run GTA 5 on the KyTyPS5 emulator?

BrutalSam captured the gameplay on a system with an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D and a Radeon RX 79000XT. The footage was used to show GTA 5 running through the KyTyPS5 emulator.
Question #3

What graphical problems are still showing up in GTA 5 on KyTyPS5?

Assets, lighting, and other graphical elements are still extremely unstable in GTA 5 on KyTyPS5. They flicker in and out of view during gameplay. Despite that, the game is running relatively stably overall.
Question #4

What still needs to be fixed before GTA 5 could run start to finish on the PS5 emulator?

The game still has major graphical problems to fix, with assets, lighting, and other visual elements flickering in and out of view. The footage also shows that there is still quite a lot of work left before it could run start to finish.

Of course, GTA 6 will be far more demanding than GTA 5, and running one title doesn't necessarily guarantee the other will work. But at the current rate of PS5 emulation progression on PC, it appears anything is possible.
