Microsoft has announced that it will set time limits on Xbox cloud game streaming later this year, and will soon sell cloud streaming play time directly to gamers. The company is also currently working on a free, ad-supported version of the subscription.
Xbox is officially capping the number of hours that Xbox Game Pass subscribers can spend streaming games. Under the new changes, which go into effect in November, Ultimate subscribers will be able to stream just 15 hours per month. Currently, Ultimate subscribers don't have a cap on game streaming hours. The new limits look like this:
- Game Pass Ultimate - 15 hours
- Game Pass Premium - 10 hours
- Game Pass Essential - 5 hours
Gamers will also be able to buy cloud time directly from Microsoft, no Game Pass needed: "Players will be able to purchase cloud playtime hours through the XBOX Store and stream eligible games they own on supported devices."
There's also a free ad-supported option. The way it works is that players will watch an ad in exchange for a specific amount of playtime. The goal here seems to be pushing enthusiast cloud users towards the ad-based game streaming option after their 15 hour monthly allotment is spent.
The news comes shortly after Microsoft confirmed that it will offer free cloud gaming with advertisements in a bid to monetize the ailing Xbox business. Cloud also seems primed for monetization, having broken a milestone; Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that Xbox "set new records for Xbox game streaming hours" in Q3'FY26, which ended in March 2026.
This is all part of Microsoft's plan to revive Xbox. Other steps included a mass reduction in the workforce, with 1,600 Xbox workers being let go in FY26 and another 1,600 to be laid off throughout this fiscal year.
