A new internal document from Sony outlines how its controversial disc phase-out will affect third-party publishers and partners.

Sony plans to stop physical disc production of new games by January 2028. This means that any game that comes out after that timeframe will be digital-only on PlayStation. But games that had already been released on the market before this cutoff date can still get physical disc releases.

Sony's official messaging to publishers was obtained by Game File's Stephen Totilo, offering more clarification on what to expect. The report states that publishers "will still be able to place re-orders for existing PlayStation disc games," confirming that these specific games can still get printed onto discs even after the January 2028 cutoff. There will be some adjustments to how discs are ordered, Sony says.

New games that come out after January 2028 will be digital-only titles. Sony says in the documentation that it will "provide publishers with the opportunity to release new games at retail using digital codes," but no specifics were offered. It's unclear whether or not the new game code distribution will happen on a card, or in an empty game box, or perhaps some kind of new form of physical token.

Sony's decision has had a significant impact on the gaming community and will undoubtedly set the industry on a different course. The PlayStation-maker has been hit with major setbacks throughout the PlayStation 5 generation, suffering two component crises alongside its peers--the first was COVID, which disrupted global supply chains and constricted chip supply, and the second is the ongoing 'RAMpocalypse,' which has driven up prices for memory and storage to astronomical heights.

The company responded to the more recent hardware impacts by raising the price of its PlayStation consoles two separate times in the last two years--the first was in August 2025, which pushed the base PS5 disc edition to $549, and the second was in April 2026, raising the price of that same console by $100 more.

It's believed that Sony's decision to nix physical media was long in the making. In 2022, the company restructured its DADC segment that's responsible for making game discs. Sony reduced its disc-making facilities to just one plant in Salzburg, Austria, which has now been repurposed to make Sony's Micro Optics technology instead of Blu-ray discs.
