TL;DR: Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is a complete remake using Ubisoft's Anvil engine with new code, characters, storylines, and expanded systems. It features reworked mechanics, six hours of extra content, and graphical upgrades. The game launches July 9, 2026, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S at full price.

Since its official reveal, Ubisoft has given a lot of details about Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced. The game is edging closer to launch, and earlier this month, Ubisoft hosted an event to let select members of the community play an early copy of the game. During the event, the directors gave even more details about the game and made it clear that Resynced was much more than a graphical overhaul of the 2013 classic.

According to Kotaku, creative director Paul Fu and game director Richard Knight were adamant that Black Flag Resynced was a completely new game from the ground up. They likened it more to being the next mainline Assassin's Creed game than a remaster of a past one. They also claimed that the game contains "zero code" from the original Black Flag, and the new one uses Ubisoft's Anvil engine, which is also the basis of Assassin's Creed: Shadows.

"Right, for me, the definition [of a remake] is not just a graphical overhaul, but a systems overhaul, or rather expansion, and new content," said Fu. "So, for me, a good remake has to have new content, new systems that expand on these core systems, which is what we aim for in [Resynced]."

- Paul Fu, Creative Director

We have already previously covered several changes that make Black Flag Resynced a proper "remake" rather than a simple remaster. In addition to the new code and modern engine we alluded to earlier, Resynced introduces three new characters, each with unique storylines. Furthermore, the game adds content for Edward's wife, Caroline, and has additional quests attached to Captain Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet. This is just what we have been able to gather from Ubisoft's reveal trailer and associated content.

Moreover, you also get reworked mechanics that completely change the dynamic of the game. For example, tailing and spying missions get an overhaul, so now they don't fail on the spot if you get spotted. Instead, you have to adapt to the situation, continue playing, and try to achieve the objectives. Social stealth is coming back, the hidden blades will be used differently, and Ubisoft has removed or altered most of the modern-day elements in the game.

Game director Richard Knight claimed that there is 6 hours worth of additional content in Resynced. Of course, all of this is on top of all the graphical improvements we have come to expect from a 2026 refresh. Ubisoft has also explicitly stated that Resynced is NOT an RPG, so it's safe to say the expectations have been set pretty high.

Will they be able to deliver on these expectations? We will find out on July 9th, 2026, when Black Flag Resynced officially launches for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Oh, and since Ubisoft is adamant that this is a brand-new game, they are also charging full price for it.
