President Trump just met with Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, a week after the president said the new Intel CEO was "highly conflicted" and called for his resignation immediately, calling the meeting a "success".
President Trump and some of his cabinet members met with Lip-Bu Tan, with President Trump writing on Truth Social after the meeting with a positive outlook on the Intel CEO.
President Trump said on Truth Social: "I met with Mr. Lip-Bu Tan, of Intel, along with Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, and Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent. The meeting was a very interesting one. His success and rise is an amazing story. Mr. Tan and my Cabinet members are going to spend time together, and bring suggestions to me during the next week. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"
An Intel spokesperson confirmed the meeting, and explained in an email: "Earlier today, Mr. Tan had the honor of meeting with President Trump for a candid and constructive discussion on Intel's commitment to strengthening U.S. technology and manufacturing leadership".
Intel also said in a statement: "We appreciate the president's strong leadership to advance these critical priorities and look forward to working closely with him and his administration as we restore this great American company".
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan's connections to China appeared in headlines in the last few weeks when Cadence Design Systems, a company he previously was in a leadership role at, pleaded guilty to unlawfully exporting semiconductor design tools to a Chinese university that works on nuclear explosive simulations. Cadence agreed to pay criminal penalties of close to $118 million to resolve the charges.
The US Justice Department announced the settlement, after which Tom Cotton, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, saw his office pen a letter questioning Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan and his connections to China. The office sent the letter to the White House before it was released to the public last week, to which the next day President Trump was watching Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo and her segment on the Intel CEO, writing in a social media post urging the Intel board to terminate him.
President Trump said: "there is no other solution to this problem".
A few hours later, Lip-Bu Tan responded with a statement posted on Intel's website, saying that the US "has been my home for more than 40 years" adding that the Trump administration "ensure they have the facts".
