TL;DR: Windows Classic Remastered is a concept OS aired via a YouTube clip, combining contemporary features with a look that takes us back to Windows 95. The result is a streamlined and retro version of Windows 11 with a distinct charm that a number of folks are pretty keen on.

If you're fed up with modern versions of Microsoft's desktop OS, then it might be refreshing to indulge in a bit of nostalgia, with a classic take on Windows that's a combination of old and new.

We should point out upfront that Windows Classic Remastered isn't an actual operating system - it's just a concept video created by a YouTuber (who has done plenty of these sorts of efforts in the past) - but it's intriguing nonetheless.

Check it out in the video clip above (which Betanews discovered) and you'll see that it's along the lines of Windows 95 meets Windows 11 (or 10), featuring a blend of Microsoft's contemporary interface configuration with a classic (read: dated, and it really is) GUI.

There's an undeniable charm to the desktop which is envisaged here, mind you, and there's certainly a lot to be said for the clean lines and overall streamlined look. Not to mention the lack of any prodding to upgrade to Edge, finishing signing in to your Microsoft account, or indeed to play Avowed.

And if you were thinking: no doubt there's no AI here either, well, you'd be wrong - but it's not Copilot. Of course, Windows Classic Remastered had to reach back to the past, and has resurrected Clippy as the desktop assistant you can query.

Yes, this tongue-in-cheek move is going to raise a smile or three, but Clippy looks pretty basic - you can't even change Windows settings with the assistant. Which, ahem, is just like the Copilot app, thinking about it (though to be fair, Microsoft does finally have that AI agent in settings - but it's taken a long time to get even that far).

This concept operating system has gone down pretty well with commenters on YouTube, and some of them would be keen to see it made as a real project.
