We've caught an early glimpse of NVIDIA's RTX 5090 laptop GPU in action in a Razer laptop, with a YouTuber providing benchmarks that show the new mobile graphics card promises to be a major leap in performance - certainly in some scenarios.
You can see the results of YouTuber Dave2D running the RTX 5090 through its paces in the incoming Razer Blade 16 in the video above, as noticed by Notebookcheck.net.
In Black Myth: Wukong, Dave2D observes that at 1440p (ray tracing on, top graphics details, DLSS balanced) the RTX 5090 is a healthy 33% quicker than the RTX 4090.
However, with Hogwarts Legacy at 1600p (ray tracing on, Ultra Settings, DLSS balanced) we see a pretty jaw-dropping 65% better frame rate from the RTX 5090 over the Lovelace flagship.
If you use DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation (MFG), the RTX 5090 becomes just over 2.5x faster than the RTX 4090 using DLSS 3 frame gen.
Marvel Rivals at 1600p (ray tracing on, Ultra Settings, DLSS balanced) was a pretty storming 48% faster with the RTX 5090 compared to the 4090, but again, the advantage was far greater with the new MFG tech in play, making the Blackwell flagship over 2.4x faster (that's MFG vs DLSS 3 frame gen again, of course, as you can't get MFG with the 4090).
Hitting pause
Of course, we need to hit the pause button here and remember that MFG vs DLSS 3 FG is not an apples-to-apples comparison. But still, even the base gains with no frame generation tech used are impressive - albeit this is a very limited selection of games tested, so be wary of leaping to conclusions based on a small sample set, as ever.
Furthermore, as Dave2D makes clear, using DLSS 4 MFG is not so great for twitch games like Marvel Rivals - it doesn't feel smooth in fast action scenes, so forget it for competitive gaming.
For single-player fodder like Hogwarts Legacy, though, the tech is ideal, though we should also remember that like previous frame gen efforts, it doesn't magically make a poor frame rate better. You need a decently smooth baseline FPS to work from, otherwise the gameplay experience will remain juddery.
Finally, the YouTuber also benchmarked Cyberpunk 2077 with all bells and whistles (RTX Overdrive, at 1600p with DLSS Balanced) and the RTX 5090 only proved slightly faster than the RTX 4090, by 12% to be precise. Although again, with MFG (apples-to-oranges style) employed, the RTX 5090 is almost twice as fast as its predecessor.
All in all, the RTX 5090 laptop spin looks to be shaping up nicely - so roll on a fuller range of benchmark results to peruse.
