Many of us use keyboard shortcuts only for basic actions like copying and pasting or switching between apps, without realizing that Windows supports shortcuts for many actions that can be performed far quicker than doing them manually with a mouse. Here are some lesser-known keyboard shortcuts that can save you valuable time.

Windows Key + V - Access Clipboard History

If you frequently copy and paste text, links, or images, you've probably experienced accidentally overwriting a previously copied item. You'll be glad to know that a simple shortcut can give you access to a useful Windows feature called Clipboard History, which keeps a list of all your recently copied items, allowing you to retrieve anything you need.

This not only saves time but also prevents the frustration of having to rewrite or search for something you've already copied. To access it, press Windows + V, and a small panel will appear showing your recent entries. For text or items you use repeatedly, you can even pin them here, then use the same shortcut to copy them again whenever needed.

Windows Key + L - Lock Your Computer Instantly

How often do we step away from our computer in a shared environment and forget to lock it, leaving our data and privacy exposed? Although manually locking your PC is an option, it can feel like a hassle if you only need to step away for a few minutes, which is why many of us tend to skip it, but doing so poses a serious security risk.

The good news? Windows lets you lock your device instantly with a simple shortcut. Just press Win + L, and your computer will be locked, requiring your credentials to regain access.

Shift + Delete - Permanently Delete a File

When we want to delete a file, we usually select it, press the Delete key, and it moves to the Recycle Bin, from where we can either restore it or clear it later. However, some files are sensitive, and we may want to delete them permanently from the start. For such files, you don't need to go through the usual process of deleting and then emptying the Recycle Bin.

Instead, you can use a simple shortcut to bypass the Recycle Bin and permanently remove them. Select the file(s) or folder(s) you want to delete, press Shift + Delete, and confirm the prompt.

Windows Key + Home - Minimize Everything Except the Active Window

There are times when we open so many windows across different apps that our entire screen becomes cluttered, making it difficult to focus on the one we're actually working on. For moments like these, Windows includes a shortcut that minimizes every other window while leaving the active one open, helping you concentrate on a single task.

Simply press Win + Home, and all other windows will be minimized. Since this only temporarily hides the windows, pressing the shortcut again restores them.

Windows Key + T - Cycle Through Taskbar Apps

When juggling multiple apps on Windows, repeatedly switching between them with your mouse can be both frustrating and time-consuming. Luckily, you don't have to rely on the mouse - Windows offers a keyboard shortcut that lets you quickly navigate between apps pinned to your taskbar.

To use it, press Windows + T to highlight the first app on your taskbar. Keep pressing the shortcut to cycle through all pinned apps, and press Enter to open or switch to the highlighted app.

Windows Key + Shift + S - Take Quick Screenshots

Normally, we press the Print Screen key to capture the entire screen. But what if you only want to capture a specific part of it? You'd have to open the Snipping Tool or use a third-party software. However, with a simple shortcut-Windows + Shift + S-you can open the Snipping Tool overlay and capture a rectangular area, a custom shape, or a specific app window.

While this method doesn't eliminate the need for a mouse, it lets you take screenshots faster. The captured screenshot is copied to the clipboard, letting you paste it anywhere or save it.

F2 - Rename Files Instantly

As a writer, I often need to rename files, especially images. Doing it one by one by right-clicking can take far longer than it should if you have many files to rename. Fortunately, there's a simple shortcut that lets you rename files or folders quickly, saving time and keeping your hands on the keyboard while you work.

Simply select the file or folder, press F2, and the name becomes editable. Then type the new name and press Enter to confirm.

Shortcuts let you perform many commonly used actions without reaching for your mouse, yet most of them remain surprisingly overlooked. By keeping your hands on the keyboard, you can save time and even reduce physical strain. Once you get used to them and they become part of your routine, you'll likely wonder how you ever managed to work without them.
