Not many gamers of today remember how much the industry was changed by 3dfx in the 90s, but now we've got a modder who has developed a PCB that features the VSA-100 chip, the chip that powered the Voodoo4 graphics card back in the day.

The 3dfx Voodoo4 graphics card was released 24 years ago, designed for power efficiency in a market that was quickly adapting to the mega-success of 3dfx at the time (NVIDIA and ATi, which was later acquired by AMD). Modder "sdz" talked about this modding experience on the Vogons forums, going through the steps and issues that he came across during the custom modification of the Voodoo4 GPU.

The modder created a working Voodoo4 GPU for laptops through a nifty MXM connector, designing the custom MXM carrier and using an FPGA to setup the required hardware and software connections, which is paramount in using older hardware like this. The new Voodoo4 GPU inside of a laptop was made to work with Windows XP, which was an operating system released closer to when 3dfx was still around.

AMD announced its new Instinct MI series AI accelerators at Computex 2024 earlier this week, but now we're hearing the company is cozying up to Samsung to get its fix of HBM memory for its upcoming AI accelerators.

During AMD's Computex 2024 keynote speed, CEO Dr. Lisa Su met with Seoul Economic Daily to talk about their HBM collaboration with South Korean giant Samsung. Samsung has now been confirmed to provide AMD with its fifth-generation HBM memory, also known as HBM3E.

On the same day, AMD announced its upcoming Instinct MI325X AI accelerator, which will feature a monster 288GB of HBM3E memory, that we now know will be provided by Samsung. Back at ISSCC 2023, the world's largest semiconductor technology conference held in San Francisco, California, AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su announced it was working with Samsung on developing HBM-PIM (processing-in-memory).

South Korea has found what could potentially be a global game-changer: a massive reserve of oil and gas offshore close to its southeastern territory in the East Sea.

The news comes from South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who provided the world with the news in his first televised national briefing, where the president gave the energy minister the green light to begin exploration drilling for the oil and gas prospects. Yoon told the press: "The possibility of the area containing as much as 14 billion barrels of oil and gas is very high. Today, I gave my approval for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy to go ahead with the drilling for exploration deep in the East Sea".

Last year, the presidential office said the government commissioned an in-depth analysis of the area, searching for potential oil and gas reserves with US-based research firm ACT-Geo, after an earlier study teased the high possibility of oil and gas reserves near the Donghae gas field.

ASUS first teased the ROG Mjolnir in April, but now the gaming-focused power bank has been officially unveiled at Computex 2024. Check it out:

The new ASUS ROG Mjolnir is a power station, power bank, and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for gamers on the go, and while the company hasn't provided the full suite of details on the new power station, it can power an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080-powered gaming PC for up to 1 hour. Not bad. We don't know if the RTX 4080 system for 1 hour claim is for a desktop or a laptop, but I'd say it's more of the latter rather than the former.

The physical handle of the ROG Mjolnir acts as a flashlight that can also be wirelessly charged when it placed on top of its base, and if your power goes out, you've got Thor's hammer to light up your room like a superhero. On the base of the hammer itself, there are 4 x 3-prong outlets, 2 x 10W USB Type-A ports, and 2 x USB-C power delivery ports ready for 100W and 65W, respectively.

Windows 10 users are in for something of a surprise - in a way - as Microsoft has just resurrected preview testing for the OS.

In a blog post, Microsoft explained that the Beta channel has been fired up again for Windows 10 testers.

Microsoft wrote:

"Today, we are opening the Beta Channel for Windows Insiders who are currently on Windows 10. This will allow us to try out new features for Windows 10, version 22H2, with Insiders before releasing them to all Windows 10 customers."

The amount of LN2 or liquid nitrogen at G.SKILL's Computex 2024 booth has to be seen to be believed, but it's understandable when you're the host of the OC World Record Stage with the industry's best memory overclockers. But, with a huge range of DDR5 memory options, we also got to take a closer look at several impressive OC builds at the company's booth - so let's go through some of the highlights.

First, let's take a look at G.SKILL's DDR5-10600 rig, which has 32GB (16GB x 2) of memory paired with an AMD Ryzen 5 8500G processor and an ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E GENE motherboard. The memory timings and latency weren't the lowest of what we saw, with CL56-62-62-126, but this was all about showcasing the impressive speed of DDR6-106000 right there on the show floor.

Next up is probably our favorite because CAMM2 modules for DDR5 (an alternative to SO-DIMM for laptops that sit flat on the motherboard) represent a brand-new form of memory overclocking to the PC space. At Computex 2024, G.SKILL is presenting its first CAMM2 module running at DDR5-7800 with impressive low-latency timings - CL36-48-48-128.

OLED gaming monitors are making their way into the display market, and now ASRock has joined the fray under its Phantom Gaming brand.

ASRock was kind enough to give me a tour of their booth at Computex 2024 where they had on display two OLED gaming monitors that caught my attention. The PG032UFS2B and the PG027QFS, a 32-inch model and a 27-inch model. Firstly, the PG032UFS2B caught my attention for its dual-mode, which enables users to switch between 3840 x 2160 (UHD) at 2240Hz refresh rate and 1920 x 1080 (FHD) at 480Hz with a simple button press.

This feature is particularly good for users that want more frames in competitive titles such as Valorant and Overwatch 2, while also wanting the visual fidelity for other titles that don't require a lot of frames, such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Elden Ring and others. As for the other specifications, the PG032UFS2B gas a 0.03 ms response time, a typical brightness of 275 nits, 2x HDMI 2.1, 2x DisplayPort 1.4, 3x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, 1x USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-B, and 1x USB-C Type-C with 65w of power delivery.

Pushing DDR5 memory speeds to around DDR-10000 speeds is not uncommon, especially in high-end rigs, but keeping it stable with low-latency memory timings (48-60-48-60) and 48GB across dual channels is something else, especially when you're talking about an affordable AMD rig built with off-the-shelf parts.

That's precisely what we saw at the Patriot Memory booth at Computex 2024, where the team used its award-winning Viper Xtreme 5 DDR5 Series - tuned and overclocked to perfection - in a rig with only an AMD Ryzen 5 8500G Desktop Processor. In a sea of LN2 and rigs with high-end cooling, it was brilliant to see a rig you could quickly put together and run for hours at DDR5-10000 speeds.

So much so that we awarded the Viper Xtreme 5 DDR5 Series and the demonstration one of our Best of Computex 2024 awards; this is an outstanding achievement and a friendly reminder of why Patriot's Viper Series is a go-to option when putting together a high-speed DDR5 build.

COUGAR GAMING has showcased some of its latest cases at Computex 2024 and one of them would likely terrify someone that has a fear of holes.

COUGAR gave me a tour of their booth at Computex where they had on display some of their latest offerings in terms of cases. The company gave me a rundown of the the FV270, a PC case that has transparency at the heart of its design, as it features a curved glass perimeter that enables an unobstructed view of the interior. Notably, COUGAR has designed the case with cable management in mind as users are able to completely hide cables behind the motherboard.

One of the other cases COUGAR showcased to me was the Airface ECO, a case that would be an absolute nightmare for someone that has trypophobia, which is the aversion or repulsion to objects like honeycombs and sponges that have repetitive patterns or clusters of small holes.

This year's Computex might have been light on next-gen GPU announcements from NVIDIA and AMD, but that doesn't mean GPU makers aren't prepping for the GeForce RTX 50 Series. Odds are we're going to see the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 later this year, and at Computex 2024, Palit had a range of new 'prototype' GPU designs it was ready to showcase - albeit with current-gen hardware inside.

First up is the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER MASTER, which features a full-metal die-cast shell made from aluminum where you can't see the screws. If you're familiar with Palit's RGB-bling GameRock series of GPUs, this is the complete opposite - a minimal, brushed metal look with a fully enclosed GPU and some minor angles on the end to give it character.

As a prototype, Palit notes that the design still has work left before it's finalized and ready for production - namely, fine-tuning the cooling to ensure it can handle a GeForce RTX GPU with up to 450W of power running at around 60 degrees. Palit wouldn't tell us if that means we'll see this design with the GeForce RTX 50 Series, but it's safe to assume that finalizing the design will happen once the team gets their hands on actual hardware and boards for the next generation of GeForce cards.
