Philips' new 31.5-inch 8K monitor arrives in Q1 2018

Anthony Garreffa | Sep 4, 2017 11:35 PM CDT

Dell rules the 8K display game right now with their out-of-this-world UP3218K, but now Philips will be joining the ultra high-res 7680 x 4320 game with their upcoming Philips 328P8K monitor.

Philips' new 31.5-inch 8K monitor arrives in Q1 2018

Philips upcoming 328P8K will rock a 31.5-inch IPS-based panel with its native 7680 x 4320 resolution, 100% Adobe RGB/sRGB color space support, and even HDR 400 support. Philips calls it HDR 400 on the 328P8K as its brightness is set at 400 nits, which is enough to meet AMD's requirements for FreeSync 2 HDR, but is not even h alf of the HDR10 standard which is 1000 nit peak brightness - and it doesn't begin to compare against Dolby Vision's 4000 peak brightness target.

We should expect a 60Hz refresh rate that will be driven by 2 x DisplayPort 1.3 connectors (the same display connectivity requirement as Dell's UP3218K display), while we can expect a USB hub with USB Type-A and Type-C ports.

Sharp announces 70-inch AQUOS 8K TV, pushing 7680 x 4320

Anthony Garreffa | Sep 1, 2017 6:57 AM CDT

For those of you that know my style of content, you'll know that I'm obsessed with high resolutions and refresh rate, as well as display technology in general.

Sharp announces 70-inch AQUOS 8K TV, pushing 7680 x 4320

This is the driving reason behind my personal purchase of the only 8K monitor on the market, Dell UP3218K - and now, Sharp have just announced their new AQUOS-branded 8K TV. Sharo has announced their next-gen AQUOS Series 8K TVs will be released in China, Japan, and Taiwan between October 2017 and February 2018. Europe will receive the 8K set in March 2018.

Sharp's next-gen 8K TV comes in at a huge 70 inches, but other than that all we know is that Sharp's new AQUOS Series 8K TV will have 4 x HDMI inputs. It will have an HDMI input dedicated to 8K content, while the other HDMI ports will accept 4K and 2K output with 8K upscaling.

Acer Predator X35: 35-inch 3440x1440 @ 200Hz with HDR

Anthony Garreffa | Aug 30, 2017 10:58 PM CDT

Acer has just unveiled my Christmas present, with the announcement of the new Predator X35 curved 21:9 display that won't make it until Q1 2018.

Acer Predator X35: 35-inch 3440x1440 @ 200Hz with HDR

Acer's new Predator X35 rocks a larger 35-inch panel with a native resolution of 3440x1440, a massive enthusiast worthy 200Hz refresh rate, and HDR abilities. NVIDIA's G-Sync technology also makes the cut, so you'll need to scope out dual GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics cards if you think you'll run 3440x1440 @ 200Hz without SLI... think again.

We're also going to get some great Quantum Dot technology, as well as zone-controlled LED backlighting. Inside, Acer will include their own GameView interface, which rocks 7 pre-set display modes (Graphics, Movie, Action, etc) and another slot for custom settings.

AOC's 1440p 144Hz FreeSync 2 monitor drops in April 2018

Anthony Garreffa | Aug 26, 2017 11:00 PM CDT

AOC has just unveiled its next-gen gaming displays, with two 27-inch models under their AGON gaming brand that will be coming out in April and May 2018 for the FreeSync 2, and G-Sync versions respectively.

AOC's 1440p 144Hz FreeSync 2 monitor drops in April 2018

The big surprise here is that both monitors feature a super-fast 0.5ms response time, which is an incredible feat considering both panels are 2560x1440 native resolution displays with 144/165Hz. The AOC AG273QCX is a 27-inch 1440p HDR display with a native 144Hz refresh rate, TN panel, and 0.5ms response time - this is the FreeSync 2 powered display which will debut at around $700.

AOC also announced a new NVIDIA G-Sync version of the display, the AG273QCG that rocks the same native resolution, 0.5ms response time, but increased 165Hz refresh rate. The AMD FreeSync 2-powered display rocks HDR support, which would probably explain the drop to 144Hz from 165Hz. I'd rather have a HDR-capable display @ 144Hz than a non-HDR display @ 165Hz, but the G-Sync variant will cost $824... $120 more than the FreeSync 2 model.

Samsung teases its massive 49-inch 32:9 gaming display

Anthony Garreffa | Aug 25, 2017 10:10 PM CDT

Samsung unveiled its huge super-wide 32:9 aspect ratio display earlier this year, but now the company has shown it off to gamers at Gamescom 2017 in Cologne, Germany.

Samsung teases its massive 49-inch 32:9 gaming display

Samsung's new CHG90 QLED Gaming Monitor rocks a massive 49-inch panel with a never-before-seen 32:9 aspect ratio, twice as wide as a 16:9 panel, and even wider than the current crop of 21:9 aspect ratio UltraWide displays. Samsung's new CHG90 rocks a 3840x1080 resolution, providing the horizontal pixels of a 4K display, but the vertical pixels of a 1080p panel.

Inside, we have the hardcore gaming worthy 144Hz refresh rate,. but Samsung also lets you knock it down to 60/120Hz if 144Hz isn't your thing. We also have FreeSync/Active Sync support, with a 1ms response time and Game Mode options that gamers can play with on the Samsung CHG90.

Acer delays its next-gen 4K gaming monitor into 2018

Anthony Garreffa | Aug 6, 2017 7:30 PM CDT

Acer has been teasing gamers for most of 2017 with its upcoming Predator X27 gaming monitor, promising 4K @ 144Hz with HDR and G-Sync... but now the company has delayed it until 2018. No reason has been given for the delay, with Acer announcing the news over Twitter of all places.

Acer delays its next-gen 4K gaming monitor into 2018

Acer would've been one of two companies with a 4K 144Hz HDR G-Sync gaming monitor, with ASUS being whisper quiet on its upcoming display with the same specs. Acer delaying its Predator X27 gaming monitor until Q1 2018 is a weird move, and could be for a few reasons. First, it has never been done before: 4K @ 144Hz with HDR is a huge shift in gaming panels. It represents the utter peak of the enthusiast market, and will quickly become the Ferrari of gaming displays.

Secondly, there's no hardware that can drive 4K at 144FPS minimum... period. Since it's a NVIDIA G-Sync supported panel, you'll want GeForce graphics cards to power it, and even two GeForce GTX 1080 Ti cards in SLI won't be enough. Maybe Acer have delayed the Predator X27 to better line up with NVIDIA's next-gen GeForce GTX 11 series graphics cards to power 4K @ 144FPS. Does this mean we'll see the GeForce GTX 1180 Ti released before the GTX 1180? It would make sense, that's for sure.

Sharp to launch new high-end TV brand in US

Derek Strickland | Jul 25, 2017 3:30 PM CDT

Japanese electronics-maker Sharp is planning a big TV-driven comeback in the United States, sources say.

Sharp to launch new high-end TV brand in US

In a bid to increase sales and expand market reach, overseas tech giant Sharp will roll out a new lineup of high-end TVs in North America. The new brand will consist of a premium line of television sets with new sound and image technologies, including LCD displays at resolutions up to 7680 × 4320 (8K). Sharp, who was the first to bring 8K TVs to market in 2015, affirms its new deluxe TV brand will sit above its previous Aquos and will only feature sets with 60-inch or larger screens.

The company has filed trademarks for the new brand and plans to roll out the net sets to North America in its Fiscal Year 2018 timeline, which begins in April 2018. Sharp has forecasted worldwide TV sales of 10 million units by the end of its fiscal 2018, and predicts the new premium line will bolster sales.

Porsche teams with AOC on a gaming monitor... just cos

Anthony Garreffa | Jul 5, 2017 11:50 PM CDT

Porsche is a company you wouldn't associate with gaming displays, but the company has just announced it has teamed with AOC on a couple of new displays that are powered by a single cable. Instead of both a display cable (either HDMI or DisplayPort) and power cable, these new displays only require a single cable.

Porsche teams with AOC on a gaming monitor... just cos

AOC teamed with Studio F.A. Porsche on two single-cable displays, with the 24-inch PDS241 and the 27-inch PDS271. The design on the displays is sleek as well, as it's just 5.2mm deep - thicker at the bottom to hold all of the electronics, obviously. AOC and Porsche includes a connected breakout box that features the HDMI port and power connector, with the display arriving in a silver theme.

The new single-cable monitors sell for $199.99 and $249.99 for the 24-inch and 27-inch monitors, respectively, with both of them hitting Amazon on July 24.

LG's new 'world's first' 77-inch flexible 4K OLED teased

Anthony Garreffa | Jun 23, 2017 1:59 AM CDT

LG has shown off the world's first 77-inch flexible OLED display that is not only transparent, but has a native 4K resolution.

LG's new 'world's first' 77-inch flexible 4K OLED teased

The impressive display is super-thin, with 40% transparency and flexible, so it can be rolled into a tube that is just 6 inches across. Considering the 77-inch display is close to 6.5-foot tall (diagonally), this is impressive. For marketing and display purposes, a tall 4K-capable flexible OLED is great - imagine walking past it in retail, it would catch your eyes no matter what.

For marketing on the go, people can roll it up and take them away with them easily. Shows like CES and Computex would be a boon for flexible, rollable displays - with E3, PAX, and other trades shows making perfect sense for these huge flexible displays.
