Can I mix and match SSDs in a RAID configuration in my Acer Nitro 5?

Joe seeks clarification regarding upgrade the 256GB SSD in his system to a 512GB SSD and we try to help out.

Question by Joe from United States | Answered by in Storage on

I have a 256GB m2 SSD already in my Acer Nitro 5 AN515-44, without thinking I ordered an additional 500GB m2 SSD to upgrade it. You said it's okay to mix and match SSDs, but only with a certain chipset, or am I misunderstanding what you meant? Anyway, it's ordered, and I'm going to try and upgrade, but am I setting myself up for disappointment?

Hi Joe,

When you mention it's only okay to mix SSDs with certain chipsets, it's my best guess you are referring to running these drives in some sort of RAID configuration. If that is the case, you will want the drives to have the same controller, even better if they are identical drives, including capacity.

If RAID is not part of your goal, then you won't need to pay any attention to the chipset of the drive, and since you are talking about upgrading from the 256GB to the 500GB that's on order, it sounds like you will want to fresh install Windows or possibly clone your old drive to be good to go.

As far as disappointment, it's hard to say. Are you expecting more performance with the increase in capacity?
