G Drive Mobile Pro SSD 1TB Review 99

For those that need a little more in their portable solution, NVMe has done wonders when paired with Thunderbolt 3. In the past, we have seen many solutions taking advantage of this pairing, offering extreme performance and capacity. In house today, we have the Mobile Pro SSD from G-Technology a wing of the Western Digital brand.

The Mobile Pro SSD is a small form factor solution aimed at users that need professional storage. Going above and beyond this solution is built from the ground up to take advantage of NVMe with a wider PCB design and inner enclosure of aluminum to push. Heat away from the internal drive.

Capacity options include 500GB and 1TB both offering Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. Performance is rated with a transfer rate of 2800 MB/s. Compatibility includes macOS 10.13+ and Windows 10 with a reformat. MSRP of the 1TB Mobile Pro SSD comes in at $449.99 with a five-year warranty.

The Mobile Pro SSD shares its aesthetic with the R-Series reviewed a few months back. On the bottom we have the activity LED while the top offers the Type-C port.

Internally, the Mobile Pro SSD takes advantage of the WD Black SN720.

G Drive Mobile Pro SSD 1TB Review 10

The performance was quite good for the Mobile SSD. Seen above we reached 2389 MB/s read, and 2194 MB/s write, ticking all of the boxes in Disk Speed Test.

G Drive Mobile Pro SSD 1TB Review 11

Switching benchmarks, we see 2702 MB/s read at QD32, and 2453 MB/s write at QD32.

We have had a good number of Portable NVMe solution come through the lab. The Mobile SSD Pro kind of sits on top of the stack because of the warranty. At five-years there isn't anything touching the G-Tech and adding in performance we have a drive that's on par with any other bus-powered solution on the market.

In our testing, the Mobile SSD Pro reached 2700 MB/s read and 2450 MB/s write with QD and looking at Disk Speed Test, we saw near 2400 read, and 2200 MB/s write. Capacity may be the only drawback of the SSD Pro as 1TB is nearing "standard" status these days and with UHD and 8K video files capacity is of utmost importance.

In closing, the Mobile SSD Pro is at the top of my list for portable storage as it currently offers ample capacity for 4K workflows along with tremendous performance needed for rendering.
