Introduction, Specifications & Pricing and Packaging

Rolling off of the back of our review on the TYLT Energi 3K Battery Pack review, we have the little brother to review, the Energi 2K Battery Pack. In our review of the bigger version of this product, we explained that TYLT has built itself up a following on some seriously slick products, with the Energi 2K Battery Pack continuing this. There are some things that the Energi 2K drops from the Energi 3K, but we'll get into this soon.

TYLT has been on a journey of self-discovery, releasing nothing but quality products at decent prices. Today, we have the second battery pack from TYLT, with 2000mAh of internal battery. Let's swing straight into it, where we'll begin with the specifications on this device.

TYLT Energi 2K Battery Pack Mobile Travel Charger Review 01

The TYLT Energi 2K Battery Pack has an output voltage of between 4.75V and 5.25V, the same as its bigger brother, with a lowered total output current of 1A, compared to 2A on the Energi 3K. Total charge time is much less though, sitting at just one and two hours, compared to between three and four hours on the Energi 3K. If you thought the Energi 3K was small, think again - TYLT has crammed much more into the Energi 2K. We have dimensions of 11 x 58 x 95 mm, or 0.43 x 2.28 x 3.74 inches. This means that you could have the TYLT Energi 2K fit in your pocket with ease, and thanks to its internal 2000mAh lithium ion battery, you have enough power to top up your smartphone.

We have three colors to choose from, with blue, gray and red on offer. TYLT offers its Energi 2K Battery Pack (and everything else it sells) through its website, with the Energi 2K Battery pack priced at $39.99.

Taking It Out of the Box

We have the same super posh packaging for the TYLT Energi 2K that we did with the Energi 3K, so let's get right into it.

The front of the package shows off that we have the red version of the Energi 2K, which I found to be quite good looking in person. The front of the package tells us that the Energi 2K Battery Pack "nearly doubles your battery life" and that it is "made for smartphones & tablets". On the back of the packaging, we have some more information, letting us know that we have a rechargeable 2000mAh battery, a slim-line design, a universal USB port, and 1A circuit for quickly charging your device.

I have come to really appreciate the amount of detail TYLT puts into its products, something that goes as deep as the packaging.

Usage & Final Thoughts/heading

Using the TYLT Energi 2K Battery Pack

For my time with the TYLT Energi 2K Battery Pack, I had my Galaxy S5 to charge up to 100%. With a 2800mAh internal battery in my Galaxy S5, and a 2000mAh battery in the Energi 2K, it meant that I couldn't recharge my smartphone back to full charge. But, I knew this going into it - and so will you if you end up purchasing the Energi 2K. What I was able to do, is go out of the house knowing that I have ~75% charge in my pocket for my S5, or if I let it deflate down to 50%, I could have it back to 100% in no time.

This is how I used the charger, so I went out to the shops for some lunch and a haircut with my Energi 2K in my pocket, and my Galaxy S5 at 46%. While I was walking around trying to keep my 3-year-old daughter from running into people and becoming a stealth shoplifter (by picking up things she walks past), I had my Galaxy S5 on charge, sitting in the baby pusher with my nearly 5-month-old daughter. By the time we were finished having lunch and about to head back to the car, my Galaxy S5 was fully charged back to 100% for me to use for the rest of the afternoon, and night.

I found the TYLT Energi 2K Battery Pack a joy to use, but one of the downsides is that it doesn't feature an embedded micro-USB to USB cable that the slightly bigger Energi 3K comes with. This has major repercussions, as it means you have to tote around a micro-USB to USB cable if you want to use the Energi 2K. I wish it was just a little thicker so that TYLT could've primed the Energi 2K with the embedded USB cable, especially as it is so portable. Also consider that the Energi 3K isn't that much bigger, but has not only the embedded USB cable, but 1000mAh more battery too.

What's Hot

It's So Small!: I can comfortably hold the TYLT Energi 2K Battery Pack in my hand, as it is much smaller than any smartphone I have in my lab (and I have a lot). This is great, as TYLT has a tiny, tiny charger in the Energi 2K. It really is just so small, and packs quite a punch with its tiny frame with its internal 2000mAh lithium ion battery.

It Looks Great: The style continues over from the Energi 3K Battery Pack, with the Energi 2K featuring a beautiful small look. We have the same LED button on the side, too. The red and black theme looks great, so if you're a fan of that color scheme, you should grab it. Remember that there is the blue version, and gray version.

What's Not

No Embedded micro-USB cable: This is a letdown, it's something we really wanted to see included.

It's a Tad Expensive: At $39.99, it's just too expensive. If it were priced at $29.99, or even better - at $19.99 - then we'd be talking. There are cheaper batteries on the market that offer much more power in something that is - yes, larger - but it's not like we're talking four times the size. Something like the LUXA2 EnerG 8800mAh Portable Battery Bank is a better buy. TYLT has its market in the way that the Energi 2K is just super small, something that will very easily fit into your pocket, but you pay a bit of a premium for that.

Final Thoughts

What we have today is a well-rounded, small and light portable battery bank that is a little on the expensive side. If TYLT had adjusted the Energi 2K so that it had an embedded USB cable, and a cheaper price, at say $19.99 for the Energi 2K and $29.99 for the 3K, then we'd be talking. What TYLT has here is a great charger that is a little expensive. But, it is super small (slightly thicker and wider than a 2.5-inch SSD) charger that can easily top up any smartphone you have to nearly 100%.

TYLT Energi 2K Battery Pack Mobile Travel Charger Review 09

This is one of the harder final thoughts I've had in a while, as I'm truly torn. I love the design of the Energi 2K, the packaging, the less-than-a-handful that it is, but it's the embedded USB cable not being present and the price that stops this from getting a higher score. I think what TYLT has is two very different batteries, with the Energi 2K being the entry-level charger, while the slightly bigger, $10 more Energi 3K featuring the awesome embedded USB cable.

If you're in the market for one of the smallest portable batteries, TYLT has a great offering in its Energi 2K. But, I think you should seriously consider, and probably buy the Energi 3K over this, as it is $10 more, comes with a larger battery, and comes with an embedded USB cable, which makes all the difference for its overall portability configuration.
