Modders at Brazilian YouTube channel TecLab took an RTX 5090 and wired it to run on standard 8-pin Mini-Fit Jr. connectors. Their reaction to the results speaks for itself: "It's colder than the original connector, guys. Where is NVIDIA? Call NVIDIA, guys. Put the raw footage out there for people to see, otherwise they'll think it's a lie. This looks like a lie."

The experiment used a Galax HOF OC LAB RTX 5090, a card designed to use two 16-pin connectors. The Sense 0 and Sense 1 pins were also rewired to ensure the card could reach its maximum power load without restrictions. A liquid cooling system with a GPU block was used to manage temperatures.
Once everything was unlocked for higher power levels, the card was put through a one-hour livestream test. The modders gradually increased the power threshold from 400W to 900W (a single 8-pin PCIe connector is officially rated for just 150W). At its peak, the modified RTX 5090 operated at a load exceeding 120A at clocks of around 3,400MHz for more than an hour while cable temperatures barely exceeded 35 degrees Celsius.

The modders also tested the card with just two 8-pin connectors, which kept temperatures below 25 degrees Celsius while the card drew 66A at over 3,200MHz. Even a single cable managed 65A at 3,100MHz, and while that cable reached 91 to 92 degrees Celsius, it still didn't melt. For reference, the stock RTX 5090 boost clock sits at around 2,400MHz.
So yes, this demo by TecLab suggests that older 8-pin connectors are still a viable option for NVIDIA's power-hungry graphics cards. The 8-pin connectors proved not only stable but cooler than the 12VHPWR cable even when pushed beyond their official spec. The problem was never about how much power the card needs. It was about the connector chosen to deliver it. No BIOS or software tweaks were involved, keeping the mod entirely at the hardware level.
