The Bottom Line

In terms of pico sized flash drives, the Samsung FIT is one of the better solutions on the market in terms of both performance and build quality. A device you definitely want to look at if you're in the market for a small pen drive.

As of late, small or Pico sized flash drives have become quite popular with users of netbooks, Ultrabook, and MacBook's. These pint-sized flash solutions have even begun to pick up quite a bit of performance as we have seen in past reviews. Samsung has recently launched a new line of tiny solutions dubbed the Samsung USB 3.0 Flash Drive FIT.

The FIT, as it is being called, is a very tiny USB 3.0 capable flash solution. As a matter of fact, it is no bigger than a thumbnail, yet carries capacities of 32GB and 64GB. Marketing numbers depict a solid 130 MB/s transfer speed while being life proof including water, shock, temperature, magnetic, and x-ray protections. Compatibility extends to Windows 7+ and OS X 10.5+.

To start off images, we have the packaging for the FIT. As you can see above, Samsung sent over the 64GB solution for our testing.

The back of the packaging eludes to this solution holding 13000+ pictures, 348 minutes of HD video, or 436 songs.

The FIT is extremely small. The edge of the drive houses the Samsung logo while the metal of the USB connector has the capacity etched into it.

The USB 3.0 connector has a thin blue line on it while keeping with the soft metal design.

After plugging the FIT into our test system, we found it formatted in the FAT32 file system, which is a tradeoff of operating system compatibility while losing compatibility for files over 4GB. For those that are going to use this solution between OS X and Windows, I recommend using exFAT. Usable capacity of this 64GB solution is 59.7GB.

Starting off testing, the FIT was able to push through marketing numbers in Windows 10 and ended up producing 153 MB/s read and 87 MB/s write. While this isn't the highest we have seen for a Pico drive, it is quite impressive for its size.

Moving over to OS X, we found similar performance at 151 MB/s read and 91 MB/s write.

Price/Performance of the Samsung FIT landed just below 80% mostly due to its high MSRP for its capacity.

While the Samsung FIT wasn't able to wreck our charts here today and take over top honors, it is quite an impressive solution for its size. As with many Samsung products, the build quality is solid as is the design that includes a satin finish to the USB port that allows this product to look so good.

In terms of performance, I was quite happy there too, as this solution was able to perform on a much higher level similar to the Strontium Nano. In our testing, I was able to push past marketing numbers and come up with 150 MB/s read on both OS X and Windows 10. On the other hand, we topped 87 MB/s write in Windows and 91 MB/s write in OS X.

Apart from the drive's performance, Samsung is listing it as five-way proof that goes along with the drive being tiny. These features include water, shock, temperature, magnetic, and x-ray protections that also add to the MSRP, which stands at $49.99 for the 64GB model with a five-year warranty.
