Nintendo Wii U games aren't doing too well in the UK

The Nintendo Wii U only launched in the UK last month and it looks like the games aren't doing too well in the sales charts. The only Wii U games to make the all-format top 40 at launch were Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U which are in 26th and 36th place respectively.

Since the launch, there hasn't been any improvement in the sales of Wii U titles, with last week's sales charts showing off bad news for Nintendo UK. Both titles that previously made the all-format top 40 weren't in the new top 40.

Nintendo did have a game in the top 20, which was the New Super Mario Bros. 2 on the Nintendo 3DS which slotted into 19th place.

RumorTT: Grand Theft Auto V releasing on March 26, 2013

Amazon may have let slip a piece of information gamers have been after ever since the announcement of Grand Theft Auto V: when will it be released? Well, according to Amazon, the game could be showing up on March 26, 2013. Of course, this date has not been confirmed and could be completely wrong, but let's take a look at it anyway.

TweakTown image news/2/7/27520_1_rumortt_grand_theft_auto_v_releasing_on_march_26_2013.jpg

The date fits into the Spring 2013 timeframe provided by Rockstar. Amazon's listing page is where the piece of information was posted, though it has since been removed. There are really only two options for why it was removed: it was either dead on the money or completely wrong.

An e-mail, pictured above, was also sent out to everyone who pre-ordered the game. In the e-mail, the estimated arrival date is set as March 27, 2013. Of course, take all of this with a grain of salt, but I'd be inclined to lean towards the game launching around that date (possibly on that day). We will, of course, keep you up-to-date with the latest GTAV news.

Ouya dev consoles ship a day early, "Ouya, baby!"

The Kickstarter-funded Ouya console that raised $8.5 million from over 63,000 backers has started shipping the development consoles a day earlier than originally announced. Those who backed the console at the required level should have their development console and two controllers by January 10.

One backer has received a shipping confirmation e-mail showing the console being shipped via DHL Express Worldwide, with the estimated delivery date being between December 31 and January 10. A majority of Kickstarter campaigns have been failing to meet the shipping guidelines that they originally offered up, so kudos to the Ouya team for getting this out on time.

If you backed Ouya, the March ship timeframe is still looking to be accurate. Earlier this month, Ouya announced 10 new games that would be available at launch. The titles include Fist of Awesome, MechKnight Chronicles, Syder Arcade, KidElectro, Space Runner, Legend of Dungeon, iMech Online, DustyRevenge, HolyShield! and Starbound.

Nintendo getting free to play games for the Wii U in 2013, starting with Tank! Tank! Tank!

Nintendo's jumping into the free-to-play gaming model in 2013 with the release of Tank! Tank! Tank! on the Wii U platform. The Namco Bandai arcade game Tank! Tank! Tank! will be free to play starting in Japan in 2013. You can download the free demo on the Nintendo eShop starting in January.

TweakTown image news/2/7/27497_1_nintendo_getting_free_to_play_games_for_the_wii_u_in_2013_starting_with_tank_tank_tank.png

The game will allow free access to the City Map on the multiplayer modes Free For All, Giant Monster, and Team Battle. The game will only be able to be played three times per day. Unlocks will come in the form of game modes and maps: My Kong ($12), maps ($2.30), and single player ($26).

What's interesting is that if you add up all of the individual eShop upgrades, you end up spending $6 more than buying the full retail version of the game. It does, however, allow you to only purchase those parts of the game that you want, possibly making the purchase cheaper.

The eShop game model has only been confirmed for Japan, but there doesn't seem to be a reason that it wouldn't be brought to the US and other locations.

Based on the vastly popular TV show, The Walking Dead, the games first episode has been a huge hit on iOS. We are really excited to hear that it has been released for a limited time on Xbox live. I know of a few people who will head straight to the Xbox Live Marketplace and download episode one.

Have you played the game on your iOS device? Are you going to download it to your Xbox 360? Let us know in the comments.

The screenshots cover a multitude of different scenes in the game, from a guy in his car with his dog, to a stylish shot of a shark swimming beneath a man in the ocean. Another one of a submarine in the water, a guy talking on his cellphone and finally, some fighter jets flying high above the city.

All of the screenshots just make me want to play it more, and once you see them, you'll want to, too.

Sim City's DRM defended by Maxis Label lead

News came out that the upcoming Sim City successor will be required to have an always-on internet connection to play and save the game. Some people have worried that this could be a problem if your internet drops out while you're playing. What exactly happens to your city? The answers aren't clear, but Lucy Bradshaw, lead for the Maxis lablel at EA, would like to defend the DRM scheme.

Creating a connected experience has always been a goal for SimCity, and this design decision has driven our development process for the game. This is easily the most ambitious game in the franchise and we've taken great care to make sure that every line of code embodies the spirit of the series. To do this, we knew we had to make sure we put our heart and souls into the simulation and the team created the most powerful simulation engine in its history, the GlassBox Engine. GlassBox is the engine that drives the entire game -- the buildings, the economics, trading, and also the overall simulation that can track data for up to 100,000 individual Sims inside each city. There is a massive amount of computing that goes into all of this, and GlassBox works by attributing portions of the computing to EA servers (the cloud) and some on the player's local computer.

Pro-Tip Friday: Nintendo recommends updating Wii U before wrapping it for under the tree

Nintendo has tweeted out a good piece of advice for parents purchasing the Wii U for their kids this Christmas. The tweet suggests that anyone giving a Wii U should open it up and download the 5GB update before wrapping it up and placing under the tree. While it's probably more important to do this for little kids, the advice holds true for anyone giving it to a non-tech person.

TweakTown image news/2/7/27434_1_pro_tip_friday_nintendo_recommends_updating_wii_u_before_wrapping_it_for_under_the_tree.jpg

Keep in mind that if power is lost during the update, the console could become bricked. If you're currently in a storm, you might not want to do the update right then. I'm not so sure that this should be called a pro-tip, though. As comments on Neogaf suggest, the real pro-tip would be to have manufacturing install the update before shipping them out.

That said, if you're getting a Wii U for a kid, you should probably do this so they can get to playing as soon as they open it.

Edit: Reader Ryan points out that the console will only brick if you lose power during the actual update portion, not the downloading part.

RumorTT: Ubisoft looking to purchase THQ's Assets

As we reported on Wednesday, THQ has filled for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy after the popular Humble Bundle event that seemed like a huge success. As a result of the bankruptcy, THQ handed over its assets to Clearlake Investments, an investment firm that deals in buying and selling businesses.

TweakTown image news/2/7/27425_1_rumortt_ubisoft_looking_to_purchase_thq_s_assets.jpg

Game maker Ubisoft has reportedly tossed their hat into the game and expressed interest in purchasing the THQ assets. No word has been released on how much Ubisoft is willing to pay, but sources are saying that they are holding out for a bottom dollar price.

If successful in acquiring THQ, Ubisoft would take over five studios - including Vigil Games, Relic Entertainment, Volition, and THQ Montreal - and attain the rights to such titles as Darksiders, Saints Row, Company of Heroes, Homefront, Metro and Red Faction, as well as the licencing deals for games based on WWE and some of the Warhammer titles.
