Super Flower Golden Green SF-800P14XE 800W Power Supply Review 01

Introduction

Most in the USA will not have heard of Super Flower before, but chances are that you have owned a power supply that was designed by or designed in conjunction with Super Flower. They are a huge OEM outside of the USA and, since their expansion in 2006, are becoming more prominent in the United States. Over the years they have manufactured and worked with numerous companies to produce power supplies such as TTGI, Kingwin, NZXT, and more.

The Super Flower PSU that we are taking a look at today is the SF-800P14XE. This is the 800W model in the Golden Green lineup. The Kingwin Lazer series and NZXT HALE-90 series are derivatives of the Golden Green series of power supplies, so you should expect performance to be similar to the NZXT HALE-90 850W PSU that we reviewed.

Specifications, Availability and Pricing

Super Flower's SF-800P14XE is capable of delivering 800W of power. It has a single 12V rail which provides 66A. The 3.3V and 5V rails are each rated for 24A and have a combined total wattage of 120W. With Active PFC, the SF-800P14XE will automatically operate between 115V and 240V.

The SF-800P14XE comes with a majority of the features that we look for in a PSU such as OCP, OVP, OPP, and SCP. Unfortunately it is lacking a couple of the higher end features. These are the Over-Temperature Protection and the 50C rating. All of the cables are sleeved very well and secured on both ends with both zip ties and heat shrink tubing.

While the Super Flower Golden Green doesn't appear to be directly available in the USA, it is available at numerous places overseas. The cheapest we could find it listed for was £ 82.17 without VAT which is about $131 USD. Super Flower Golden Green PSU's carry a 5-year warranty.

The Packaging

Super Flower's green and gold packaging dominates the box. Most notable here are the SLI/Crossfire X logos. Checking both websites reveals the SF-800P14XE is not listed as an official SLI or CrossfireX product.

On the back we see some specifications and a partial connector availability list. It lists what connectors are in the box, but not how many or cable length.

One side of the box lists more features while the other side simply repeats what is elsewhere on the box, but in bullet-point form.

The top of the SF-800P14XE opens up to a clear window. Here you can get a real glance at the PSU without opening the box. There is no I/O specification label listed on the packaging.

Inside the Box

Once we opened things up we found that the power supply and cables were padded on all sides with thick, dense foam. Pulling things out, we find the power supply and a bag of cables. On the side of the power supply we can finally see the I/O specification label.

On the other side we find the Golden Green series label specifying this as the 800W model.

The back contains a very open honeycomb mesh grill with only the AC input and on/off switch restricting airflow.

Moving towards the front of the power supply, we can see the modular connections for the SF-800P14XE. All of the modular connections come with rubber plugs out of the box. We have removed the bottom row for the picture. Leaving these in place for the connections that aren't used should help keep them clean and dust free even after years of use.

The SF-800P14XE uses a 140mm blue LED fan to cool the PSU and push the heat out of the back.

Also included in the box are the eight different modular cables, user manual, and AC input cable. The AC input cable is of the Type E/F variety and is used mainly in France and Germany.

Cabling Arrangement & A Look Inside

Cabling Arrangement

The Golden Green SF-800P14XE comes with a nice mix of cables and connectors for an 800W power supply. The fixed cables include the 20+4 pin Main cable, ATX 4+4 cable, and a PCI-E cable that feature both a 6-pin and 6+2 pin connector. Modular cables include a pair of PCI-E 6+2 pin cables, a pair of PCI-E 6 pin cables, two SATA cables, a single mixed SATA/Molex cable, and a single Molex + FDD cable.

The SF-800P14XE features only a single 12V rail, so there is no load balancing to worry about here.

A Look Inside

Popping open the SF-800P14XE reveals a pair of heatsinks cooling the power supply. While these could be larger, we certainly have seen worse. For those that would like to compare how similar the SF-800P14XE is to the NZXT HALE90 850W PSU, check this picture for comparison.

The primary side of the power supply features dual Nippon Chemi-Con capacitors rate. One is rated for 400V and 330 µF while the other is rated for 400V and 470 µF.

The secondary side of the SF-800P14XE also features Nippon Chemi-Con caps everywhere.

Test Results & Final Thoughts

Test Results

Our load tests utilize a couple of FAST ATE active load testers and a variety of other equipment such as an oscilloscope, power conditioner, temperature probe and a power consumption meter. You can read more about our standard testing approach here.

The tests performed are based around six conceivable setups that are out there and progressively load down the PSU up to the power supply's limits or 1000W, whichever comes first. Since our test equipment's limits are greater than the SF-800P14XE, we can test it to the maximum

Super Flower Golden Green SF-800P14XE 800W Power Supply Review 20

Throughout all five of the tests performed on the SF-800P14XE there was very little change in voltages. Both the 3.3V and 5V rails were rock solid from start to finish. Even on the 12V rail there was only a total drop of .18V resulting in a 1.5% total change in voltage regulation.

Ripple on the 12V line was also excellent, reaching a maximum of 34mV peak to peak under full load. While we are on the subject of excellence, the efficiency for the SF-800P14XE was great. Efficiency never dropped below 89% during our tests.

Final Thoughts

Super Flower's Golden Green SF-800P14XE is a great power supply from start to finish. It performs well and produces clean power from low loads to full loads. The efficiency is great and will help pay for itself over time. At a price of only $130, the SF-800P14XE is a steal. It is priced right in the middle of most 800W power supplies and is $30 cheaper than the next 800W 80Plus Gold power supply we could find.

The SF-800P14XE also has some negatives to go along with the good. Why Super Flower included the SLI Ready and ATI CrossfireX logos on the front of the box when they aren't listed on the appropriate websites is a mystery. Availability in the USA is low, but it is readily available elsewhere. Finally, there is the inclusion of six PCI-E connectors, but anyone trying to use triple GPU's with an 800W PSU is asking for trouble.
