MSI teases M.2 XPANDER-AERO SLIDER Gen5: looks like a GPU, cools your Gen5 SSD

Anthony Garreffa | Jun 16, 2024 10:25 PM CDT

MSI showed off its interesting M.2 XPANDER-AERO SLIDER at Computex 2024 earlier this month, and while it might look like a graphics card... it's not: it's an expansion card that houses not one, but two M.2 PCIe Gen5 SSDs which is impressive.

MSI teases M.2 XPANDER-AERO SLIDER Gen5: looks like a GPU, cools your Gen5 SSD

The new MSI M.2 XPANDER-AERO SLIDER can hold two M.2 22100 form factor Gen5 SSDs, as well as supporting hot swapping, which means you can remove either of the Gen5 SSDs at any time (if that's something you need, or want to do).

MSI is providing some active cooling with its AERO fan cooling system for the Gen5 SSDs, with two cooling modes on offer: the fans can stop completely if the SSDs aren't running hot enough to require active cooling, or an automatic mode when the M.2 SSDs are removed.

Phison's new PS5031-E31T: world's first DRAM-less Gen5 SSD controller, up to 10.8GB/sec

Anthony Garreffa | Jun 16, 2024 6:40 PM CDT

Phison had plenty to show off at Computex 2024 earlier this month, including the world's first DRAM-less Gen5 SSD controller with the new Phison PS5031-E31T Gen5 SSD controller. Check it out:

Phison's new PS5031-E31T: world's first DRAM-less Gen5 SSD controller, up to 10.8GB/sec

The company says that its new PS5031-E31T Gen5 SSD controller is essential in making Gen5 SSDs more cost-efficient, with some things tweaked that will result in cheaper Gen5 SSDs in the near future. Phison says that its new E31T SSD controller is the world's first DRAM-less Gen5 SSD controller, still pushing about the 10GB/sec read threshold.

We have 4K random reads and write IOPS hitting 1500K, with 4 x NAND channels built on TSMC's 7nm process node, packing two Arm Cortex-A5 cores. Phison's new E31T Gen5 SSD controller uses its in-house 7th-generation ECC engine based on the LPDC coding scheme, providing great speeds and data reliability.

Patriot Memory pushes performance to the limit at Computex 2024

Jak Connor | Jun 11, 2024 12:10 AM CDT

Patriot is no stranger to pushing performance to the absolute limit, and Computex 2024 was no exception. The company has shown why it's a global leader in high-performance memory, storage, and more.

Patriot Memory pushes performance to the limit at Computex 2024

Patriot has introduced a new era of speed when it comes to DDR5 memory by pushing its Viper Xtreme 5 series to an astonishing 8,200 MT/s and 11,500 MT/s when overlocked. Patriot told me that this new overlocking benchmark has enabled a new level of speed that is now being adopted by overclockers around the world and has resulted in new records being set in various configurations.

The company also presented a new collaboration with MSI with the Viper Xtreme 5 RGB DDR5 MPOWER series, which has specifically been designed for gamers and overlockers. The new series is capable of reaching 8,000 MT/s and capacities up to 48GB. This combination of speed and capacity will provide gamers and workstation rigs the performance they are looking for when wanting to go as fast as humanly possible.

Phison has earned itself a Computex 2024 TweakTown award for its crazy build that uses 16 SSDs with Phison's E26 technology with an Apex Storage card to achieve data transfers of 54.8 GB/s in a single PCIe Gen 5 slot.

Phison shatters Computex 2024 with insane Apex Storage X16 Gen5 at 54.8 GB/s speeds

I was lucky enough to get a full demo of the new system at the Phison booth where it was explained me to the system was using an Apex Storage X16 PCIe 5.0 card that was equipped with 16 SSDs using Phison's E26 controller. These drives, working together, managed to reach a staggering sequential read of 56 GB/s, sequential write of 54 GB/s, random read of 20M IOPS, and a random write of 19M IOPS. And all on a single PCIe card slotted into a motherboard.

We reviewed the impressive Phison E26 controller back in January, and were blown away by its incredible speeds and now seeing sixteen of these SSDs working together in front of us during a live demo has really put into perspective the incredible industry-leading work Phison is doing in the SSD space. Congratulations to Phison for what it has achieved with this build, the speeds here are truly remarkable and shouldn't be understated.
