The new Blackmagic URSA Cine 12K has a wide variety of inputs and outputs, including 10GbE ethernet and dual M.2 SSD slots for some super-fast, massive SSDs to handle the 4K, 6K, 8K, and 12K video you can capture with it. The company has a bunch of new design tweaks on the URSA Cine 12K, with all configurations on the camera done through locking nuts, making it easy to put it on a tripod, slider, or go handheld shooting 12K video.

Inside, Blackmagic built a completely new 12K 35mm large-format sensor for the URSA Cine 12K camera, supporting five different 12K formats. The 12K resolution itself is an eye-popping 12,288 x 6912 for the 16:9 aspect ratio, up from the 8192 x 4608 capable of 8K full frame with a 16:9 aspect ratio. Impressive stuff.

On the physical side, the Facecam MK.2 is slimmer than the original, thanks to a new low-profile design. Elgato finally added a privacy shutter, too, which was missing in the 2021 original. The good stuff comes with the new image processing, which delivers better out-of-the-box color accuracy, improved low-light performance, and the ability to record 1080p60 HDR video.

The Facecam MK.2 is also fully supported by Elgato Camera Hub, which offers in-depth controls over all camera aspects, from zoom to FOV to aperture and exposure settings. Camera Hub also integrates NVIDIA's AI-powered RTX Broadcast features and tools, bringing everything together in one handy spot.

Scientists create camera that can take 156 trillion frames per second

Jak Connor | Mar 27, 2024 1:47 AM CDT

The more frames per second, the more a viewer can see, but what if the frames per second reached the trillions? How slow can slow motion actually be?

Scientists create camera that can take 156 trillion frames per second

A team of researchers has decided to answer that question by creating a new scientific camera called SCARF, which stands for Swept-Coded Aperture Real-time Femtophotography. The creation of this camera has been detailed in a new study published in the esteemed scientific journal Nature, where research led by Professor Jinyang Liang of Canada's Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS), who is known for breakthroughs in high-speed cameras, explained that traditional frame-by-frame capturing techniques has its limitations.

"For example, phenomena such as femtosecond laser ablation, shock-wave interaction with living cells, and optical chaos cannot be studied this way," Liang said.

This new 3D printer is a chocoholic's dream

Darren Allan | Mar 6, 2023 9:31 AM CST

The Cocoa Press is a 3D printer with a distinct difference - it produces models made from chocolate so that you can sculpt all kinds of weird and wonderful edible forms of the stuff.

This new 3D printer is a chocoholic's dream

This 3D Printer was created by Ellie Weinstein and is readying for pre-orders next month (on April 17th).

The idea is you can fashion chocolates in all sorts of nifty shapes with different textures, the kind of chocs that you'd usually only get at high-end places (chocolatiers) and for a stupidly pricey outlay, probably.

Scientists shrunk a working camera to the size of a grain of salt

Jak Connor | Nov 30, 2021 1:33 AM CST

The possibilities are endless with micro-cameras as they could be used for health purposes such as detecting problems within the human body, or being outfitted to robots that have severe size and weight requirements.

Scientists shrunk a working camera to the size of a grain of salt

However, the technology has quite made it there yet as previous creations of nano or micro cameras haven't been able to produce high-quality images with accurate color. Now, researchers from Princeton and the University of Washington have overcome some of those previous hurdles with a new micro-camera that is about the size of a grain of salt.

Instead of using curved glass as a typical camera would, the tiny camera uses what is called a "metasurface", which is about half a millimeter wide and is covered in cylindrical posts that are about the same size as the virus HIV. All of these posts seen on the metasurface serve as an optical antenna, and when partnered with machine learning algorithms, the camera is able to produce an image that far exceeds previous creations in its category.
