Apple changes policy on apps

By: Array

Got friends who run an Android or Blackberry - when you have an iPhone or iPad - and wished you could play games against each other? Well, rub your genie bottle one more time and that wish will come true.

Apple has reversed it's policy on rejecting apps that were created using cross-platform tools such as Adobe Flash CS5. Up until now Apple has been denying apps onto it's App Store if they were programmed in anything but their tools. Developers had to choose between putting apps on the App Store OR other phone app stores (like Google Androids "Market").

What does this mean you ask?

Now, developers can make games for both devices. Yes there were work arounds, but when the gates are let down on rules - people will adopt to them better. Apple most likely know this and have reversed their ruling - which is a good thing.

Apple patent app hints at future biometric sensors

By: Array

A new patent application has turned up from Apple that sounds interesting. The application is for sensors that would potentially let the user sign in just by picking the iPhone up.

The system uses a series of sensors in the case of the phone that would read the person's heart rate while holding the phone. The iPhone would be able to tell if the user was authorized by analyzing the heartbeat.

Exactly how the analysis would work is unclear. I wonder if you took set up your login while resting and then tried to access the phone with your heart rate increased from exercise if you would let you in.

Do a lot of travelling? Converse app for iPhone a perfect partner

By: Array

There's a new language translation app coming out for the iPhone which looks to be very well thought out and should be embraced by travellers as the perfect companion in times when you'd otherwise be left scratching your head.

TweakTown image news/1/5/15121_03.jpg

Converse iPhone app is a double ended multilingual translator that provides face-to-face instant messaging between people of different languages. It's designed in such a way that messages from either end of a single iPhone can be written at the same time and displayed to the person on the other end.

51 different languages are selectable as are non-Latin keyboards for languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Thai, Czech, Hebrew and Ukrainian.

The publisher's website is said to be going live very soon.

Western Digital offers iPhone app for viewing photos on some WD external HDDs

By: Array

Western Digital is a big maker of storage devices for internal drives and external units. Western Digital has announced a new iPhone app that is free and lets users view images stored on certain WD external HDDs from anywhere in the world.

The app works with the My Book World Edition or WD ShareSpace Network drive. The app lets the user connect to the HDD and view their photos.

On the shared drive, the app limits the user to their own folder of shared items. WD says the app lets users view up to 250,000 images and users have to sign up with MioNet to use the app. The MioNet service is free too.

Lenovo Shows off LePhone's App Store early

By: Array

When we were at CES we saw a new Phone from the Lenovo crowd called the LePhone. It was an interesting concept and seemed to be a lot of things the iPhone was not. But still it was and is not an iPhone. However, today we stumbled across an interesting tidbit of information. Lenovo is talking about their app store for the LePhone. This is moving ahead of schedule and could mean that we might see the LePhone a little earlier than we thought.

Of course, the LePhone will only be launching in China to begin with, but we do hope that it will spread and head over to the rest of the world sooner rather than later.

Homebrew apps come to the Zune HD

By: Array

Back when the Zune HD came out one of the things that we lamented was the lack of any type of "jailbreaking" well we have been shown that we have been wrong for some time. It seems that Homebrew for the Zune has been around for some time. It all revolves around the MS XNA Game development platform. There are quite a few games that have been developed for the Zune and Zune HD using this format. However, since there has never been anything like Redsn0w or Blackra1n for the Zune most people are not aware of it.

Gizmodo has an excellent guide for people that want to explore these games and apps. That is if you are not afraid to do a little hands on hacking. We plane to dive into this in the near future to see just how difficult it is. For now you can head over and take a look for yourself.

Apple adds Gift This App option

By: Array

I have reviewed several apps over the years for the iPhone and typically, it's a big pain in the rear. It involves an app maker sending me gift cards typically and it's just a hassle.

TweakTown image news/1/4/14597_5.jpg

Apple has introduced a new feature for the App Store called Gift This App that will help geeks like me and those looking to give a pal an app as a gift. The Gift this App option lets you pay for an app that your pal can download on your dime.

What you do is pay for the app, enter the person's name and email, and they get an email with a link to get the app. The credit card is charge just as it would be if you downloaded the app. This is a cool feature!
