We've heard numerous rumors about Samsung launching foldable smartphones this year, with some reports suggesting that these devices might arrive before the Galaxy Note8.
However, Samsung Display Principal Engineer Kim Tae-woong killed those rumors today. Tae-woong said that bezel-free display currently sells well and there is no need to rush the development of the foldable display. According to him, this technology will be ready for commercial launch in 2019.
During Display TechSalon held in Seoul, Chung Won-seok, an analyst at HI Investment and Securities, confirmed Tae-woong's point of view.
Samsung Display is expected to commercialize foldable phones in 2019 because the company does not need to sell the new hardware because it is already enjoying 20 percent of operating profits with bezel-free display. When the demand for bezel-free handsets slows down, Samsung will unveil the foldable display as the next card.
Tae-woong also confirmed to Korea Herald that Samsung is still facing some technical challenges related to the foldable display technology that they need to improve.
