I would strongly recommend checking out this distribution for all the linux newbies: Lycoris Desktop LX. I use Suse 9 which is also good (YAST2 is an excellent tool + comes with many software) however using Lycoris is almost exactly like using Windows. Besides, installation is very easy and fully graphical as expected, one can find his way through the desktop menus very easily.
Like Suse 9, Lycoris has also auto update but lacks OpenOffice since its only a single CD dload.
I recommend this OS for going along your daily routine, with the addidion of all updates, OpenOffice 1.1 and WineX you wont miss windows one little bit.
