Testing and Final Thoughts

The animated image shows what Icy Docks calls the Drive Guiding Mechanism in action. The tabs do guide the drives to the exact position needed for a smooth insertion lining up the male and female connectors. They also hold the drives in place by putting a small amount of pressure on the drives.

Here we see the Icy Dock flexiDock MB795SP-B installed in one of our test systems. We're running a test on a Seagate EXOS 12TB drive to have comparison data for an upcoming review of the EXOS 14TB model.

The MB795SP-B also has a 2.5" drive installed. We placed the drive in the system to see if we could still close the front door that acts as a dust filter. Sadly, the 2.5" drive sticks out enough in this position that we can't close the door. After moving the MB795SP-B to the middle bay, we could close the door with a 2.5" drive installed in the enclosure.

Final Thoughts

We are disappointed with the build quality of the flexiDock MB795SP-B but not in the operation or current pricing.

This is the first Icy Dock product we took exception to in the build quality category. The flexiDock series uses mixed materials to keep the costs down. This hasn't been a problem with these products in the past, but with this model, the pieces don't fit as well as they should. With many of Icy Dock's products, I would be comfortable using them in a boutique quick, a custom PC to show off. The flexiDock MB795SP-B doesn't have that same quality.

Small minor fitment issues aside, the flexiDock MB795SP-B does exactly what it's supposed to. We've tested two HDDs and an SSD with the flexiDock MB795SP-B, and didn't see any performance degradation over the drives connected directly to the host system's SATA cable.

The flexiDock MB795SP-B's redeeming quality is the low price. We found this system at Amazon for less than $45. It's not the lowest priced model in the flexiDock series, but it's the only model with support for both 2.5" and 3.5" form factors.

The Bottom Line

The Icy Dock flexiDock MB795SP-B works as advertised but doesn't have the same fit and finish as many of the other products from the company.
