When Vantec sent the email asking if I would like to check out their latest enclosures, I thought they were ready to launch a new USB 3.1 or USB-C series. While that didn't happen, the TX lineup carries a good amount of variety for anyone wanting to make use of a spare drive on a budget. I would say the durability is going to be higher for the enclosures with both having aluminum exterior shells while the docks are top to bottom plastic.
The performance will be plenty for anyone using a hard drive in any of the models. Each of these solutions use a SATA 6Gb/s interface allowing you to get the most out of your drive, which was the case in my own testing. I was able to reach 400 MB/s read and write with both solutions, although the dock will have some performance issues if you are accessing both drives at the same time.
Overall, the pricing is what really makes both of these solutions fantastic options for slapping in an old drive and using it as backup or even game storage.
I was able to find the NexStar TX 3.5" enclosure at $21.99 with a one-year warranty, and the Dual Bay NexStar TX Dock comes in a touch higher at $29.99 with a one-year warranty.
