Introduction and Package

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 02

We've already mentioned a few times over the recent weeks, but our lab here in Taipei is really being dominated by a few key products at the moment. One of them is Z87 related items which mainly consists of RAM kits and motherboards. The other area that is extremely busy is the video card side of things.

It's very one sided, though, with NVIDIA cards really being the only ones popping up lately. This is of course due to the fact that NVIDIA over the past month has chosen to grace us with a new series in the form of GTX 700.

While we thought the series would stop for a while once the introduction of the GTX 770 and GTX 780

had hit us, it seems that NVIDIA had one more model in them with the GTX 760 and while they say this is the last one we'll see for a while now, we wouldn't put it past NVIDIA to have something up their sleeve in the event they need it.

While the GTX 760 is the latest model, we've actually got partner designs of all the new NVIDIA models so we'll be of course working our way through them in the coming weeks. Today we're going to be looking at a GTX 770 2GB which comes from Palit. This particular model falls under the JetStream name that we saw Palit launch last year. With big coolers and big out of the box overclocks, it looked to be a good series for the company.

Today we'll be taking the time to see just what the model can do once we push the clock speeds up even higher. As always there's a few things we've got to do before we look at the overclocking side of things. Let's see what's going on with the package first.

Package

Taking a look at the front and the back of the box you can see the standard JetStream design that we've seen from other models that Palit offered under this name. The front has the brand, series and name along with a couple of the main features and the amount of RAM. The back then goes into a little bit more detail on some of the NVIDIA specific features that are on offer from the GTX 700 series model.

If we open up the box we then get more information on what exactly we're dealing with when it comes to the video card itself. Of course the big highlight for the model here is the JetStream cooler and you can see the main features in regards to the triple fan setup and massive heatsink are covered here. Other features include DrMOS and 8-Phase PWM power. We also have some information on ThunderMaster, the overclocking utility by Palit. The other side of the box gives us our first look at the card.

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 07

When it comes to the bundle, Palit like most companies these days, don't offer much in the way of video card bundles. We've got a manual and driver CD along with a dual 6-pin PCIe to 8-pin PCIe power connector, DVI to VGA and HDMI to DVI connector and a JetStream case sticker.

The Card and Specifications

The Card

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 08

If you've seen any of the higher-end JetStream offerings from Palit in the past, the triple fan heatsink design wouldn't be new to you. You can see we've got a large fan in the center that goes over the top of the GPU, while two smaller fans are found at each end to help keep everything as cool as possible. If you look carefully you can see the massive heatsink behind the fans and some copper heat pipes.

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 10

Taking a look across the top you can see we've got a single 8-pin PCIe and 6-pin PCIe power connector at the back. Closer to the front you can see the standard dual SLI connector setup, which allows up to three GTX 770s to run in SLI.

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 11

Moving to the front you can see we've got the typical I/O setup with two Dual-Link DVI connectors in the form of a DVI-D and DVI-I. You can see we've also got a HDMI and DisplayPort connector, along with a vent to let some of the hot air escape out the back of the card and your case.

Specifications

Out of the box a reference GTX 770 carries a core clock of 1046MHz, which is boosted up to 1085MHz. As for the 2GB of GDDR5, that comes in at 7012MHz QDR. The JetStream version of the GTX 770 from Palit comes overclocked out of the box. While like most companies they've chosen to leave the memory clock alone, they have bumped the core clock to 1150MHz, which has pushed the boosted clock up to 1202MHz.

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 01

As we mentioned earlier, our plan was to overclock the GTX 770 JetStream today. Looking above you can see we pushed the core a little higher to 1180MHz, which pushed the boost clock up to 1232MHz.

As for the 2GB of GDDR5 memory, that's now running at a solid 7600MHz QDR.

Benchmarks - Test System Setup

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 99

We would like to thank the following companies for supplying and supporting us with our test system hardware and equipment: Intel, ASUS and Corsair.

Before we get into the performance we need to quickly cover the video cards that are in our graphs here today. Along with the Palit GTX 770 2GB JetStream which we've overclocked to 1180MHz / 7600MHz QDR, we've also got the reference GTX 770 at both its stock clocks and overclocked to 1153MHz / 7664MHz QDR.

Also included in our graphs today is the recently looked at MSI GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming which is overclocked to 1155MHz / 6800MHz QDR and the reference clocked GTX 780 3GB. On the AMD side we've got the PowerColor PCS HD 7950 overclocked to over 1100MHz on the core and the AMD HD 7970 GHz Edition, which is running at its reference clock speeds.

The FPS Numbers Explained

When we benchmark our video cards and look at the graphs, we aim to get to a certain level of FPS which we consider playable. While many may argue that the human eye can't see over 24 FPS or 30 FPS, any true gamer will tell you that as we climb higher in Frames Per Seconds (FPS), the overall gameplay feels smoother. There are three numbers we're looking out for when it comes to our benchmarks.

30 FPS - It's the minimum number we aim for when it comes to games. If you're not dropping below 30 FPS during games, you're going to have a nice and smooth gaming experience. The ideal situation is that even in a heavy fire fight, the minimum stays above 30 FPS making sure that you can continue to aim easily or turn the corner with no dramas.

60 FPS - It's the average we look for when we don't have a minimum coming at us. If we're getting an average of 60 FPS, we should have a minimum of 30 FPS or better and as mentioned above, it means we've got some smooth game play happening.

120 FPS - The new number that we've been hunting down over recent months. If you're the owner of a 120 Hz monitor, to get the most out of it you want to get around the 120 FPS mark. Moving from 60 FPS / 60 Hz to 120 FPS / 120 Hz brings with it a certain fluidity that can't really be explained, but instead has to be experienced. Of course, if you're buying a 120 Hz monitor to take advantage of 3D, an average of 120 FPS in our benchmark means that in 3D you will have an average of 60 FPS, which again means you should expect some smooth gameplay.

Why are some graphs incomplete?

Adding new game benchmarks is a long, tedious and time consuming task as every video card has to be re-tested in those new benchmarks. Because of that reason we have always just evaluated our benchmark line up every six months. To stay up to date and current with the latest benchmarks and games available, we've changed our approach to adding new benchmarks.

Our benchmark line up will progress and be updated as newer more intensive games with benchmarks comes to light. While this will mean that initially you may only see a single video card in those particular graphs, as the weeks go on and we test more and more video cards, the results will grow quickly. This will help keep our benchmark line up as up to date as possible as we introduce and remove games on a constant basis.

Lost Planet 2 is a third-person shooter video game developed and published by Capcom. The game is the sequel to Lost Planet: Extreme Condition which is also made by Capcom, taking place ten years after the events of the first game, on the same fictional planet. The story takes place back on E.D.N. III 10 years after the events of the first game. The snow has melted to reveal jungles and more tropical areas that have taken the place of more frozen regions. The plot begins with Mercenaries fighting against Jungle Pirates. After destroying a mine, the Mercenaries continue on to evacuate the area, in which a Category-G Akrid appears and attacks them. After being rescued, they find out their evacuation point (Where the Category-G appeared) was a set-up and no pick up team awaited them. The last words imply possible DLC additions to the game, "There's nothing to be gained by wiping out snow pirates... unless you had some kind of grudge."

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 24

Lost Planet 2 performance is both very strong across the board with some nice gains being seen. You can also see again that performance from the Palit GTX 770 2GB JetStream is very close to the more expensive GTX 780 3GB reference card.

The Rangers have since occupied the D6 military facility, with Artyom having become an official member of the group. Khan, the nomad mystic, arrives at D6 to inform Artyom and the Rangers that a single Dark One survived the missile strike. Khan believes the Dark One is the key to humanity's future, and wants to make peace with it, while Ranger leader Colonel Miller wants to kill the creature due to its potential threat. Miller sends Artyom to the surface with a mission to kill the Dark One; he is accompanied by Anna, Miller's sarcastic daughter and the Rangers' best sniper.

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 27

Like Fire Strike, our results are quite limited for Metro Last Light at the moment, but over the coming weeks we'll see the amount of video cards listed grow.

What we can see, though, is that the Palit GTX 770 2GB JetStream when overclocked manages to pull in a good playable number at 1680 x 1050, but falls a little shy of the 60 FPS number we want at 1920 x 1200. Of course falling short there means that 2560 x 1600 isn't an option.

The game was released on 20 November 2012, which is in the 47th week of the year (in reference to the protagonist, Agent 47).

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 33

Hitman Absolution hits that FPS wall almost at every resolution across the wall. Only at 2560 x 1600 does it fall a few FPS from it. Fortunately you can see the FPS is strong even at the highest resolution with a 52 FPS minimum and a 62 FPS average.

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 35

BioShock Infinite sees a bump across the board with some great numbers seen at 1920 x 1200 and 1680 x 1050. At the higher 2560 x 1600 resolution you can see we fall short of the 60 FPS number on all setups.

High Quality AA and AF

While we test all our games with maximum in-game settings, turning on Anti-Aliasing (AA) and Antistrophic Filtering (AF) helps take the intensity of our testing to another level.

Here we see video cards go from playable FPS to an unplayable FPS and the real power houses continue to help break that 60 FPS mark we always aim for to provide a smooth gaming experience.

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 36

With AA and AF on you can again see very strong performance. Compared against the other video cards here, though, you can the Palit card sits ahead of the GTX 780 3GB again.

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 37

Metro Last Light is one of our most recent benchmarks and because of that we can't really talk about how it compares to other cards. All we can say, though, is like the GTX 760 from MSI which we overclocked, we're not able to get the FPS we need at both resolutions.

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 38

Just Cause 2 sees some nice performance gains and you can see at the highest resolution the overclock is enough to push us into the 60 FPS realm, something that the other GTX 770s couldn't do.

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 39

While the overclock manages to boost performance past the GTX 780 3GB again, you can see at both resolutions we're still below the 60 FPS number we're always on the hunt for to provide a solid gaming experience.

Temperature Test

The temperature of the core is pulled from MSI Afterburner with the max reading used after a completed run off 3DMark Vantage and the Performance preset.

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 40

Taking a look at the temperature you can see we're hitting the 80c mark; a number seen on a lot of the new high-end GTX 700 series cards.

Idle comes in a little above the 40c mark. Of course it's important to remember that the video card is overclocked when compared to the reference card.

Sound Test

Pulling out the TES 1350A Sound Level Meter we find ourselves quickly yelling into the top of it to see how loud we can be.

After five minutes of that we get a bit more serious and place the device two CM away from the fan on the card to find the maximum noise level of the card when idle (2D mode) and in load (3D mode).

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 41

Looking above you can see that noise levels sit towards the middle of the pack, which are a good place for these new GTX 700 series cards.

We can see that other options come in at a decent chunk of decibels higher.

Power Consumption Test

Using our PROVA Power Analyzer WM-01 or "Power Thingy" as it has become quickly known as to our readers, we are now able to find out what kind of power is being used by our test system and the associated graphics cards installed. Keep in mind; it tests the complete system (minus LCD monitor, which is plugged directly into AC wall socket).

There are a few important notes to remember though; while our maximum power is taken in 3DMark06 at the same exact point, we have seen in particular tests the power being drawn as much as 10% more. We test at the exact same stage every time; therefore tests should be very consistent and accurate.

The other thing to remember is that our test system is bare minimum - only a SSD hard drive is used with a single CD ROM and minimal cooling fans.

So while the system might draw 400 watts in our test system, placing it into your own PC with a number of other items, the draw is going to be higher.

Palit GeForce GTX 770 2GB JetStream Overclocked Video Card Review 42

Like noise levels, we can see power draw sits towards the middle of the pack.

At load, we're in the mid 400 watt range, while idle sits in the mid-100 watt range.

Pricing, Availability and Final Thoughts

Without and exact US price at the moment, it's hard to know exactly where we'll see the Palit GTX 770 2GB JetStream sit. If we look at Newegg, though, and compare to the competition, an educated guess would see the model sit at the $424.99 - $429.99 mark, which would line it up with other overclocked GTX 770s with upgraded cooling.

I think something we need to note when it came to the overclocking is that the video card didn't see a huge bump in speeds. 1180MHz on the core means that it is overclocked by only 30MHz. However, something that's really important to note, though, is the out of the box clock speed of the core.

While like most companies Palit have chosen to leave the memory clock alone, the 1150MHz overclock out of the box is one of the best on the market. We don't see anyone actually beat this clock speed, instead we see only MSI match it. It's worth noting, though, that the 1150MHz clocked MSI offering is a Lightning based card and carries a $449.99 price tag, making it the most expensive GTX 770 2GB on the market currently.

While we didn't test the out of the box performance, we know from the overclock we managed to achieve from the reference card what performance would look like. Because of a slightly higher boost clock speed, the Palit offering should come out slightly ahead.

The out of the box clocks, though, are what really have a huge appeal to us. While most companies sit below the 1100MHz mark, Palit has come out and offered 1150MHz out of the box. While we haven't been able to get much more than that when it comes to overclocking, the overall overclock was only slightly behind what we saw out of the EVGA video card we looked at the other week.

One of the biggest issues when it comes to Palit video cards, though, is getting one in North America is difficult - if not near impossible sometimes. This is something that's extremely disappointing due to the fact they produce some truly fantastic models. On the other hand if you're over in Europe, the Palit GTX 770 2GB JetStream can be picked up for 276 pounds ex VAT from Scan UK, which converts to $421.
