Introduction and Package

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 02

Earlier in the week we saw NVIDIA expand the new GTX 700 series that launched just a few months ago. The latest addition to the series is a $249 mid-range video card named the GTX 760 and from what we've seen from it already, we're impressed with what NVIDIA has done - especially when you consider the price point.

Out of the box we found ourselves fairly impressed with the reference card at stock and even happier with what the model did when we overclocked it. We must admit, though, we did think the model ran a little warm sitting at 83c at load. Because of that we found ourselves really looking forward to seeing what companies would do with retail model with aftermarket cooling solutions.

Like the other GTX 700 series models that launched, we're seeing companies straight away from day one offer us non-reference cooled ones, and while we're sitting on a couple at the moment, the first one we'll be taking the time to check out comes from MSI. Falling under the new Gaming Series, we're excited to see just what MSI has done with the new model which also carries the Twin Frozr name, one that has always been one of our favorite coolers.

While an OC model out of the box, we've today decided to kick it up a notch and overclock the model even higher to see just what we're able to get out of it and see what kind of extra overclock we're able to get over the reference cooled model.

Package

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 03

Checking out the front of the box you can see the new "Gaming Series" design. While this is the first time we've seen the new Gaming Series on a video card, it's not the first time we've seen it, as we saw it on the MSI Z77A-GD65 Gaming Series motherboard back in May. Taking a look at the front of the box, you can see we've got a very simple and clean design, which we love. You've got the Gaming series logo alongside the MSI one and the model name. You can also see in the bottom left corner it's an OC Edition.

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 04

If we take a look at the back of the box, you can see we've got a run down on some of the main features that are offered including the Advanced Thermal Design via the Twin Frozr IV cooler and the higher quality components via the Military Class 4 classification.

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 05

Moving inside the package you can see we've got a fairly standard bundle with the quick user guide on the left, along with the main driver CD. As far as cables go, you can see we've got a dual-Molex to PCIe, 6-pin PCIe to 8-pin PCIe and a DVI to VGA connector.

The Card and Specifications

The Card

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 06

The new MSI GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC uses the popular Twin Frozr IV cooler that we've seen on other high-end models from MSI in the past. The main difference here is that MSI moved away from the standard brushed silver look. Instead MSI has gone for a new black and red color scheme which looks great and of course goes in line with the new Gaming Series color scheme.

The heatsink on a whole is actually massive and you can see look at the top just how much it overshoots the PCB. We've got two massive fans on the card which sit on top of a huge heatsink. Looking at the bottom you can also see a couple of heat pipes coming out the bottom to help pull heat away from the core.

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 08

MSI have upped the ante by moving away from the reference dual 6-pin PCIe power connectors and instead opted for a single 8-pin PCIe and 6-pin PCIe power connector. This should assist in achieving a stronger overclock over the reference card. Heading towards the front you can see two SLI connectors.

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 09

The I/O department paints the standard picture with two Dual-Link DVI connectors on the right. One is a DVI-D, while the other is DVI-I. You can also see at the bottom left side that we've got a HDMI and DisplayPort connector.

Specifications

As we mentioned earlier, we're dealing with a pre-overclocked video card from MSI today. Looking below you can see MSI have bumped the core up to 1120MHz, which has in turn bumped the Boost clock up to 1085MHz. This compared to the reference 980MHz core (1033MHz via Boost). As for the 2GB of GDDR5, MSI have chosen to leave that at the standard 6008MHz.

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 01

Heading into MSI Afterburner, we decided to see just what we could get. Bumping the voltage up, we managed to push the core up to 1155MHz (1225MHz via Boost). As for the 2GB of GDDR5, that was pushed to an even 6800MHz QDR. This compares to the reference care which saw the core go to 1105MHz (1158MHz via Boost). As for the 2GB of GDDR5, that pretty much came in at the same speed with a 6808MHz QDR clock.

Benchmarks - Test System Setup

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 99

We would like to thank the following companies for supplying and supporting us with our test system hardware and equipment: Intel, ASUS and Corsair.

We've got many video cards in our graphs today that will sit alongside the new MSI GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC that we've clocked to 1155MHz on the core. We've of course got the reference GTX 760 2GB we've looked at running at both its stock clocks and also overclocked to 1105MHz on the core, which was the most we could get out of it.

Alongside that we've also got the MSI GTX 660 HAWK 2GB and reference GTX 770 2GB. As for the AMD side of things, we have the Sapphire HD 7790 1GB Dual-X OC, PowerColor PCS HD 7950 overclocked to over 1100MHz on the core and the reference HD 7970 3GB GHz Edition.

The FPS Numbers Explained

When we benchmark our video cards and look at the graphs, we aim to get to a certain level of FPS which we consider playable. While many may argue that the human eye can't see over 24 FPS or 30 FPS, any true gamer will tell you that as we climb higher in Frames Per Seconds (FPS), the overall gameplay feels smoother. There are three numbers we're looking out for when it comes to our benchmarks.

30 FPS - It's the minimum number we aim for when it comes to games. If you're not dropping below 30 FPS during games, you're going to have a nice and smooth gaming experience. The ideal situation is that even in a heavy fire fight, the minimum stays above 30 FPS making sure that you can continue to aim easily or turn the corner with no dramas.

60 FPS - It's the average we look for when we don't have a minimum coming at us. If we're getting an average of 60 FPS, we should have a minimum of 30 FPS or better and as mentioned above, it means we've got some smooth game play happening.

120 FPS - The new number that we've been hunting down over recent months. If you're the owner of a 120 Hz monitor, to get the most out of it you want to get around the 120 FPS mark. Moving from 60 FPS / 60 Hz to 120 FPS / 120 Hz brings with it a certain fluidity that can't really be explained, but instead has to be experienced. Of course, if you're buying a 120 Hz monitor to take advantage of 3D, an average of 120 FPS in our benchmark means that in 3D you will have an average of 60 FPS, which again means you should expect some smooth gameplay.

Why are some graphs incomplete?

Adding new game benchmarks is a long, tedious and time consuming task as every video card has to be re-tested in those new benchmarks. Because of that reason we have always just evaluated our benchmark line up every six months. To stay up to date and current with the latest benchmarks and games available, we've changed our approach to adding new benchmarks.

Our benchmark line up will progress and be updated as newer more intensive games with benchmarks comes to light. While this will mean that initially you may only see a single video card in those particular graphs, as the weeks go on and we test more and more video cards, the results will grow quickly. This will help keep our benchmark line up as up to date as possible as we introduce and remove games on a constant basis.

Fire Strike doesn't quite see the same kind of increase, but you can see in the lower standard run, the overclock is enough to push us into the 6,000 point realm by a good margin.

Lost Planet 2 is a third-person shooter video game developed and published by Capcom. The game is the sequel to Lost Planet: Extreme Condition which is also made by Capcom, taking place ten years after the events of the first game, on the same fictional planet. The story takes place back on E.D.N. III 10 years after the events of the first game. The snow has melted to reveal jungles and more tropical areas that have taken the place of more frozen regions. The plot begins with Mercenaries fighting against Jungle Pirates. After destroying a mine, the Mercenaries continue on to evacuate the area, in which a Category-G Akrid appears and attacks them. After being rescued, they find out their evacuation point (Where the Category-G appeared) was a set-up and no pick up team awaited them. The last words imply possible DLC additions to the game, "There's nothing to be gained by wiping out snow pirates... unless you had some kind of grudge."

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 24

Lost Planet 2 performance on the new model is strong, but you can see when we overclock the MSI GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC, performance at the highest resolution moves out of the 60 FPS area and into the 70 FPS area, ensuring smooth game play.

Rico Rodriguez returns as the protagonist, aiming to overthrow the evil dictator Pandak "Baby" Panay and confront his former mentor, Tom Sheldon.

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 25

Just Cause 2 performance is also very strong and you can see the best number to look at here is the 2560 x 1600 test. The stock reference GTX 760 2GB fell just a single FPS short of the 60 FPS number we're always on the hunt for.

Move over to the MSI GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC that we've overclocked today and you can see we not only get past the 60 FPS number we want, but actually get into the low 70s.

Again we see strong gains and just overall really strong performance, but the most important result here is the 2560 x 1600 test. BioShock Infinite sees some great gains and you can see at 1920 x 1200 we really see some great improvements, as we move from a 59 FPS average to an awesome 67 FPS. 2560 x 1600 while also seeing some strong gains still has a number that is too low.

Benchmarks - High Quality AA and AF

High Quality AA and AF

While we test all our games with maximum in-game settings, turning on Anti-Aliasing (AA) and Antistrophic Filtering (AF) helps take the intensity of our testing to another level.

Here we see video cards go from playable FPS to an unplayable FPS and the real power houses continue to help break that 60 FPS mark we always aim for to provide a smooth gaming experience.

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 36

Far Cry 2 sees a bit of change, but you can see at both resolutions, we've got some strong FPS at both resolutions, including even the more intensive 2560 x 1600.

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 37

With our non-AA and AF tests struggling under Metro Last Light, it comes as no surprise that the numbers we want here unreachable when we turn on the two heavy hitting technologies.

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 38

We can see some excellent gains under Just Cause 2 with over 20% being seen at 2560 x 1600. You can see, though, with a 55 FPS average, we're still below the magical 60 FPS number we're always aiming for, but not too far off if you dropped graphics quality settings a little.

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 39

Sleeping Dogs sees some good gains, but like Metro Last Light, the numbers are just too low to be considered playable.

Temperature Test

The temperature of the core is pulled from MSI Afterburner with the max reading used after a completed run off 3DMark Vantage and the Performance preset.

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 40

Considering the overclock and the strong performance gains we've seen with the MSI GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC today, the fact that the card also run 11c cooler at load is just simply awesome.

Sound Test

Pulling out the TES 1350A Sound Level Meter we find ourselves quickly yelling into the top of it to see how loud we can be.

After five minutes of that we get a bit more serious and place the device two CM away from the fan on the card to find the maximum noise level of the card when idle (2D mode) and in load (3D mode).

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 41

Noise levels aren't too bad and you can see above we're sitting towards the middle of the pack.

Power Consumption Test

Using our PROVA Power Analyzer WM-01 or "Power Thingy" as it has become quickly known as to our readers, we are now able to find out what kind of power is being used by our test system and the associated graphics cards installed. Keep in mind; it tests the complete system (minus LCD monitor, which is plugged directly into AC wall socket).

There are a few important notes to remember though; while our maximum power is taken in 3DMark06 at the same exact point, we have seen in particular tests the power being drawn as much as 10% more. We test at the exact same stage every time; therefore tests should be very consistent and accurate.

The other thing to remember is that our test system is bare minimum - only a SSD hard drive is used with a single CD ROM and minimal cooling fans.

So while the system might draw 400 watts in our test system, placing it into your own PC with a number of other items, the draw is going to be higher.

MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC Overclocked Video Card Review 42

At under 400 watt draw at load, any good quality power supply isn't going to have trouble dealing with a setup like this.

Pricing, Availability and Final Thoughts

Coming in at $259.99 at the time of writing, the MSI GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC hits at an awesome price point. It's only $10 more than the suggested price that NVIDIA announced when the new model launched. You can see, though, that the model is really leaps and bounds better than the reference design.

Move away from the overclocking and the gaming performance for the moment and look just at the Twin Frozr IV cooler. You can see in typical MSI fashion they've really put a wonderful product together. The cooler looks great and you can see when we overclocked as high as we did, we still managed to get a video card that operated 11c cooler than the reference card.

The new black and red color scheme also looks fantastic. MSI have put together a fan that not only looks good, but performs exceptionally well in all the key areas.

Of course overclocking is one of the highlights and you can see that the effort that MSI has put into the card helps make a real difference when it comes to the overclocking side of things. The reference card managed to push the core clock up to 1155MHz from the 1105MHz that we saw out of the reference card.

1105MHz is of course a very strong overclock from the default 980MHz. But when you combine the even higher clock we got from the MSI GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC with the Boost clock, you can see some really awesome performance gains that equate to over 10% when compared to the overclocked reference card and gains of over 20% when compared to the reference card at its stock clocks.

MSI really came out swinging with the GTX 760 2GB Twin Frozr Gaming OC. Its addition to the new Gaming Series is fantastic and we're really looking forward to seeing more video cards fall into this new category in the coming months. If you're on the hunt for a new GTX 760, this is one you should be looking at for sure.
