Specifications, Availability and Pricing

Enermax MODU87+ 800W Power Supply 02

Enermax has outfitted the MODU87+ 800W power supply with four 12V rails which are capable of pushing almost the entire load of PSU, maxing out at 792W. Those with power hungry video cards will find plenty of power here. How the rails are split up is a mystery at this point, but we will track that down once we take a peek inside. Enermax is known for some odd rail layouts, but always manages to make everything work quite well.

Short of being 100% modular like the SilverStone ST1000-P we recently reviewed, Enermax has every feature that you could begin to imagine including eight forms of power protection, a twister bearing fan that runs as low as 330 RPM for reduced noise, HeatGuard to keep the fan running after system shutdown to reduce PSU temps faster, a 50C rating to ensure stability at high loads for extended periods of time, and CordGuard to prevent accidental disconnection of the AC power cord. If you can think of it, Enermax gives it to you with the MODU87+ 800W power supply. All of this comes at an MSRP price of $249. 99 and is backed by a 5-year warranty.

The Packaging

The external packaging contains most of the information that prospective buyers look for. The front is quite subtle, but that is also the nature of Enermax. Here we see simply the output capacity, 80 Plus Gold Rating, and SLI Ready logos.

The back is where Enermax fills you in on absolutely everything going on with the MODU87+ 800W PSU. Virtually every bit of information on this power supply is listed here, even if it is a bit crammed in there. Since the sides of the box do not contain any information, it would have been nice to have some of this spread out for readability.

The bottom of the box contains repeated information from the back, but lists it in a multitude of languages for those around the globe.

Inside the Box

Popping open the box reveals the user manual and the power supply itself. Enermax shows off their Gold certification with some gold bling on the internal 139mm fan.

Enermax opted to place the output specification label, serial number and QA stickers on the top of the power supply.

The sides of the power supply boldly show off the MODU87+ logo. The opposing side not shown has the logo inverted so that it is displayed properly regardless of the case that the unit is being installed in.

On the back of the MODU87+ we can see that Enermax uses the standard honeycomb design to permit maximum airflow. This is mildly restricted by the additional placement of the Enermax logo above the AC input.

The front houses the connections from the modular cables. These are a bit different than most are used to seeing. This is because they support a proposed connector change for future GPU's to 10/12 pin connectors. Don't worry; these still break out into the 6+2 pin connectors that are used on all video cards.

On the bottom is the highly reflective gold twister bearing fan used to cool off the inner workings of the MODU87+ power supply.

Cabling Arrangement

Enermax serves up plenty of connections to utilize the full 800W that the MODU87+ 800W PSU offers. There are a total of six 6+2 PCI-E connectors for those wanting to feed a triple GPU setup. There is also a wide variety of connections and cable lengths for various peripherals.

Rail distribution is split up amongst four 12V rails. The first rail powers the native 20+4 main, ATX 4+4, and EPS12V connectors. The second rail gives power to the two native PCI-E connections. Rail three provides juice for a pair of modular PCI-E connectors and a pair of peripheral cables. The fourth and final rail is for the last two PCI-E connectors and remaining three peripheral cables.

A Look Inside

Test Results and Final Thoughts

Test Results

Our load tests utilize a couple of FAST ATE active load testers and a variety of other equipment such as an oscilloscope, power conditioner, temperature probe and a power consumption meter. You can read more about our standard testing approach here.

The tests performed are based around six conceivable setups that are out there and progressively load down the PSU up to the power supply's limits or 1000W, whichever comes first. Since our test equipment's limits are greater than the Enermax MODU87+ 800W, we can test it to the maximum.

Enermax MODU87+ 800W Power Supply 20

The MODU87+ 800W power supply continues to uphold Enermax's reputation of producing quality power supplies. To date, the only power supply that we have tested to show better results is the SilverStone ST1000-P. There is absolutely nothing negative to say about the performance out of this power supply.

Final Thoughts

I was thoroughly pleased with the MODU87+ 800W power supply from the moment it arrived and through the entire review. There is no doubt that it is a solid hitter for any enthusiast looking for a rock solid power supply. The numbers speak for themselves and there is quality built into every inch of this PSU. I would happily recommend this unit for anyone looking for a high performance power supply.

Unfortunately Enermax has this unit priced a little bit high for the performance that it offers. The $250 price tag makes it much less of a bargain compared to the SilverStone ST1000-P which offers more power, marginally better performance and the ability for quad video cards.

Efficiency is mildly higher on the Enermax which may offset the initial cost somewhat over the time of the unit. Enermax also gives you a 5 year warranty on the MODU87+, while SilverStone only offers a 3 year warranty.
