Introduction

Kingston HyperX PC3-19200 (2400MHz) 4GB Kit 02

The HyperX name is getting stronger and stronger as the months go on. We see the company hit us with more aggressive modules on a constant basis these days. The best thing, though, is that when we hit that clock speed, we've been able to get even more out of the kit.

Today we're dealing with a PC3-19200 (2400MHz) kit. That's some serious juice and you have to wonder once we hit that number, are we going to be able to get much further?

There's ultimately only one way to find out. Before we go looking at the overclocking potential and its performance, we'll first have a closer look at the package and the modules themselves.

This should be the fastest kit to date we've tested with our new review layout which includes the Total Performance Rating graphs. The question is, can Kingston light up the graph and take out top spot?

The Packaging and Modules

The Package

We've got a pretty nice retail kit going on here today which is a little different to what we've seen from recent HyperX kits. Having a look, you manage to get a good look at what's included in the package.

The Modules

The big extra included is the fan and we've got to say it's one of the best ones we've used to date and the quality is really second to none. The setup is pretty easy with the sides sliding in and two screws being screwed in each side.

Kingston HyperX PC3-19200 (2400MHz) 4GB Kit 07

Looking at the kit itself, there's nothing that you haven't seen before with the same overall HyperX design being seen. Each side is almost identical, yet one has a sticker that carries with it some of the details which we'll look closer at on the next page.

Overclocking

As we already mentioned in the introduction, this is a 2400MHz kit. Since we've dealt with kits this fast before, we knew that getting to the speed wouldn't be an issue and to no surprise, we didn't have any.

Using 9-11-9-27 at 1.65v, getting to 2400MHz DDR wasn't an issue. The real question is, can we achieve even more from the kit using the same timings?

Kingston HyperX PC3-19200 (2400MHz) 4GB Kit 01

You can see the validation here.

The answer to that question is Yes! - Sticking with the 1.65v, we managed to achieve a nice little speed bump.

Kingston HyperX PC3-19200 (2400MHz) 4GB Kit 500

You can see the validation here.

Topping out at 2490MHz DDR with the same timings, we managed to leave the memory divider at the same speed which means our CPU went from 4.2GHz to 4.357GHz.

Important Editor Note: Our maximum overclocking result is the best result we managed in our limited time of testing the memory. Due to time constraints we weren't able to tweak the motherboard to the absolute maximum and find the highest possible FSB, as this could take days to find properly. We do however spend at least a few hours overclocking every motherboard to try and find the highest possible overclock in that time frame. You may or may not be able to overclock higher if you spend more time tweaking, or as new BIOS updates are released. "Burn-in" time might also come into play if you believe in that.

Test System Setup and wPrime

Kingston HyperX PC3-19200 (2400MHz) 4GB Kit 99

We would like to thank the following companies for supplying and supporting us with our test system hardware and equipment: Intel, ASRock, Sapphire, Western Digital, Noctua and Thermaltake.

Today we'll be looking at the Kingston kit at both 2400MHz DDR and 2490MHz DDR. We've also included the Tri Chan Corsair kit which is running on our beefier 980X / X58 setup, while at the same time also including the 2200MHz DDR Hercules kit.

Let's get started!

Important Note: When modules are overclocked we adjust the BCLK which not only lets us fine tune the MHz out of a module, but in turn increases the overall CPU clock speed. While we always make the effort to include the BCLK and CPU Speed in our graphs, please just make sure that you make note of these when looking at the results. In some tests that don't purely test the memory speed the extra MHz on offer from the CPU can increase the result. Of course, it's worth noting that having faster memory gives you the ability to run your CPU at a higher speed.

wPrime

Version and / or Patch Used: 1.62
Developer Homepage: http://www.wprime.net/
Product Homepage: http://www.wprime.net/

wPrime uses a recursive call of Newton's method for estimating functions, with f(x)=x2-k, where k is the number we're sqrting, until Sgn(f(x)/f'(x)) does not equal that of the previous iteration, starting with an estimation of k/2. It then uses an iterative calling of the estimation method a set amount of times to increase the accuracy of the results. It then confirms that n(k)2=k to ensure the calculation was correct. It repeats this for all numbers from 1 to the requested maximum.

Kingston HyperX PC3-19200 (2400MHz) 4GB Kit 20

wPrime is mainly CPU dependant and you can see that the Crucial kit on the 980X really flys here. The Kingston kits do perform well on our P55 testbed, though, and you can see as we up the RAM MHz which in turn has pushed the CPU MHz up, we get a nice little boost again in performance.

No real surprises when it comes Far Cry 2 performance with all kits performing very similar to each other.

Total Performance Rating (TPR)

Total Performance Rating

The TPR graph is a combination of all our benchmarks in which we test our memory modules with.

The TPR number is a combination of:-

wPrime Benchmark, Everest Ultimate, SiSoft Sandra, Sciencemark 2.0 and Far Cry 2.

Due to the nature of some benchmarks where scores having a lower is better result, we've had to change the way we do the numbers when compared to our video card ones. Far Cry 2, SiSoft Sandra and Everest Ultimate numbers are all combined. In Sciencemark 2.0 and wPrime Benchmark where a lower number is better, we have a base number of 300. The score we get from the kit is then removed off that number. There's a total of 600 base points.

For example; if the wPrime Benchmark score is 193.266 and 6.297 for 1024M and 32M respectively, the number that is added to the graphs is 400. That number is obtained by using the following equation: 600 - 193.266 - 6.297 = 400.437. It's then rounded down to 400 in this case. In the event that the RAM was slower in wPrime, the total would be lower which represents our TPR graphs exactly how we want.

Kingston HyperX PC3-19200 (2400MHz) 4GB Kit 41

It doesn't come as any surprise after looking at the results that the Kingston kit smashes our TPR graphs, taking out the top two spots.

Final Thoughts

Kingston have cemented themselves in the ground as a performance memory company; and not just one of those companies that release fast modules, but one that release fast quality modules. There's not a whole lot you could ask for when it comes to a performance memory kit.

We've got a nice cooling fan with the kit that is excellent quality and when it comes to the overall design of the kit, while it's nothing new, it's a great one that is excellent quality and really, if it isn't broke, why fix it?

As always, though, the kit doesn't just stop at the default speed. With a bit of time we were able to get even more performance out of the kit. To be honest, you could probably get even more if you wanted to adjust the timings and relax them a bit more.

On the topic of timings, the 9-11-9-27 setup while sounding a little relaxed is actually quite impressive for a kit of this speed.

As always, this kind of speed is going to come at a price and while the modules haven't gone into mass production yet, we don't doubt for a second the modules are going to set you back a pretty penny.

With that said, though, Kingston tend to be quite aggressive when it comes to pricing and while the kit will carry a slight premium because of the fan, hopefully you're not going to be too shocked with the price they come in at.

If you have the need for speed, money to burn and the components that can complement a high end kit like this one, the HyperX PC3-19200 is a beautiful kit. While not the quickest when it comes to releasing the fastest kits, Kingston release a quality kit that doesn't have a problem running at its reference speeds and beyond.
