The green eyed monster

Newcomers Mionix are quickly proving themselves as a competent producer of peripherals for the gaming market.

Their latest send-out is the Saiph 3200 Gaming Mouse and a jumbo sized mouse mat called the Alioth 400.

Any gamer, casual or otherwise, knows that having just a high spec mouse is not good enough; you need the surface to go with it.

So, let's take a look at this green machine!

The box is really quite nice straight off the bat, a heavy duty outer casing with a magnetic hinged lid. The money shot of the mouse is proudly displayed on the front and the details adorn the packaging, as would be expected.

Similar for the Alioth mouse mat, a soft backed mat that can be rolled for easy storage and transport, contained in a nice clear poly container letting you see the quality of the goods.

I cannot state how much I like good packaging; there are too many companies thinking it's ok to blister-pack their products, making them super hard to get into.

A nicely presented product while increasing production costs does mean that a customer feels they are getting more for their money, and usually in the world of high end peripherals like this, are willing to spend that bit extra to get the best for their money.

And liberating the mousey from its hole is a simple procedure that does not require scissors or lasers.

The matt finish of the mouse is nice to see, black being a choice colour for gamers because it looks so bad ass!

Flipping the mouse, we can see the laser tracker on the mouse as well as the Teflon glide feet and a compartment for weight adjustment.

The weight holder itself contains 3gram ingots to allow you to adjust the device to your liking. I prefer a heavy mouse overall so that I'm less likely to make jerky un-necessary movements.

Right side up, we can get a closer look at the smooth finish of the mouse and the cleverly crafted ergonomics. This is a really nice mouse to hold in the hand!

We also see the DPI adjustment buttons below the scroll wheel as well as the Mionix logo which just looks awesome.

Never mind the material, feel the width

The Alioth mouse mat is a rubber backed PU-foam with a smooth cloth layer on top made with microfibers to ensure an excellent tracking surface that will not feel like sandpaper on the hand.

The close up detail shows the fibrous nature of the surface with an excellent quality of build. The graphics are pin sharp on it too!

The glory shot of mouse and mat here. Notice the rubberised thumb grip point below the forward and back button. This makes the mouse one of the nicest I've had my hand around in a long time.

You are probably wondering what the mouse looks like plugged in and we have you covered. Firstly, here's a nice standard profile shot.

Point, Click, Destroy

Now, let's get down and dirty with the software side of things and explore the in-system configuration options.

Downloading and installing the latest driver is always recommended. Once installed, we are presented with the tweaking tools.

The first thing I notice is no fancy flashy GUI for Mionix. THANK GOD! What is wrong with things looking traditional people?! You don't need some work of art GUI to impress us gamers, so long as the options are well tooled and easy to find.

The button options allow you to configure all the standard button choices, as well as double click speed.

Scroll speed is handled easily, either by lines or a page at a time.

Mionix Saiph 3200 Gaming Mouse and Alioth 400 Surface

Cursor acceleration and speed is easy to adjust, although if you have used a gaming mouse before you will probably not want any acceleration to your mouse.

The DPI adjustments are saved to the mouse itself so that when you unplug and take your mouse along to another machine your special setup will be maintained.

Macros can be assigned to some of the keys which is always useful in games like World of Warcraft. The macro recording process is all spelled out for you on this screen too, so it's easy enough to get right.

Grand Finale

Getting down to brass tacks, this mouse delivers when it comes to gaming. I've been playing a variety of FPS and RPG games and it tracks smoothly and accurately and has enough adjustability to suit any gamers needs.

The weight adjustment is a standard feature for gaming mice, so it's good to see it's implemented in a straightforward fashion.

One thing I noticed, however, is my constant gripe with gaming mice being the lack of side-scrolling ability. It just gives the mouse so much more flexibility in its deployment and it's not a costly feature to implement. However, it can reduce the life expectancy of the scroll wheel, so that could be why some manufacturers choose not to implement it.

Overall, I think this is a mouse worth having in the arsenal of gaming periphery and is currently my desktop favourite due to its cushy grip and precise tracking ability, not to mention its subtle looks and awesome lights!

Coupled with the Alioth mouse mat, this pair kicks some serious ass!
