Sony's new PS4 Pro rocks double GPU power, 4K and HDR

Derek Strickland | Sep 7, 2016 2:35 PM CDT

Sony's PlayStation 4 Neo is officially called the PS4 Pro, a high-end 4K-ready console that targets the "hardcore gamer" with double GPU power, HDR support, and a boosted CPU.

Sony's new PS4 Pro rocks double GPU power, 4K and HDR

The PlayStation Pro will feature a 1TB hard drive, upscaled 4K resolution support, High Dynamic Range (HDR), higher memory bandwidth, an internal GPU that's double the power of the original PS4 and an overclocked CPU with a "boosted clock rate." According to PlayStation 4 architect Mark Cerny, the PS4 Pro supports "streamlined rendering techniques" instead of brute force 4K rendering to deliver smooth 4K upscaling.

Sony's new upgraded PS4 Pro will not replace current PS4 models, and will not have exclusive games; it will play all existing PlayStation 4 games, and older first-party games like Naughty Dog's Uncharted 4 and Sucker Punch's Second Son will be upscaled to 4K resolution with HDR support. "The same discs and downloads will run on both the standard model, and the PS4 Pro," said SIE President Andrew House.

UPDATE: Super Mario Run will only be timed exclusive on Apple's App Store, and will eventually come to Android platforms at an unspecific time.

Mario jumps to Apple iOS with exclusive platformer

Nintendo has announced that its first-ever real smartphone game will be exclusive to Apple's iOS platform.

In a surprise move, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto took the stage at Apple's iPhone 7 event to reveal Super Mario Run, a light Mario Bros. platformer built around collecting coins, for iOS devices. Interestingly enough you can actually play Super Mario Run one-handed, and the game looks pretty spiffy from what we've seen so far. Sadly, Super Mario Run will feature in-app purchases, so that means microtransactions.

Bethesda games could show up on Nintendo's new NX

Derek Strickland | Sep 7, 2016 10:02 AM CDT

Bethesda games haven't shown up on Nintendo hardware for quite some time, but if Nintendo's new NX hardware meets certain technical requirements, the studio says it "will absolutely be something that we consider."

Bethesda games could show up on Nintendo's new NX

In a recent interview with Metro, Bethesda's vice president and PR specialist Pete Hines says that the studio will seriously consider Nintendo's new NX hardware if it meets certain criteria. Hines gives key insight on why Bethesda has strayed away from Nintendo's hardware in the past, saying that the studio would have to make too many sacrifices to make their games compatible with the limited hardware--ie the Wii U.

But what if Nintendo's new NX changes all that with some beefy hardware? We have reports that the NX will be a transforming handheld hybrid which doesn't bode well for Bethesda game support. Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime has officially said that the NX "isn't about specs, it's about the content," but in this case Bethesda will only provide the content if the specs match. Here's what Hines had to say:

Cyberpunk 2077 might have flyable cars and vehicles

Derek Strickland | Sep 7, 2016 9:14 AM CDT

Details on Cyberpunk 2077 are less than scarce, but a new job listing from CD Projekt RED hints that we'll be able to take control of our own aerial vehicles and fly around the game's futuristic open-world cyberpunk cities.

Cyberpunk 2077 might have flyable cars and vehicles

CD Projekt RED is currently hiring a Vehicle Gameplay Programmer that will design Cyberpunk 2077's futuristic flying ships and cars. "The person in this position will cooperate with Gameplay & Level Designers teams to create the whole architecture of vehicle related code, and the physics of driving / flying in those vehicles," reads the listing.

Based on the way the listing is worded, it sounds like players will be able to actually pilot said vehicles in the game. The developers aren't any strangers to vehicles: Geralt can use a number of locomotion in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, including riding on horseback or slicing through the waters in a sailboat. But horseback and sailing are very different than three-dimensional aerial flight, and it'll be interesting to see how the devs pull this off.

PlayStation VR comes with a demo disc with 8 games

Derek Strickland | Sep 7, 2016 6:06 AM CDT

Every PlayStation VR headset comes with a demo disc with a sampling of eight virtual reality "games".

PlayStation VR comes with a demo disc with 8 games

We already knew that Sony's PlayStation VR headset comes bundled with a demo disc, but up until now we weren't sure exactly what the disc contained. As it turns out the included demo disc is beefy in its selection, containing a free copy of the PlayStation Worlds "game" as well as snippets from upcoming PSVR games like DriveClub VR, Battlezone, and EVE: Valkyrie.

Remember that the full PlayStation VR games will be "passive, simple experiences", so don't expect very much from the demos as the actual full games won't be very big--certainly not anything like what we're used to. Resident Evil 7 is practically one of the only full PSVR games available. Oh, PSVR games will cost anywhere from $10 to $60, and that's on top of the minimum $399 price of the headset--not including the ~$300 PlayStation 4 console needed to power everything. Sony also plans to release more than 100 PSVR games through the headset's lifecycle.

Love Splatoon? You could win Nintendo's new NX

Derek Strickland | Sep 7, 2016 5:14 AM CDT

Nintendo and ESL have teamed up to organize weekly Splatoon tournaments in Europe where players compete for a rather mysterious grand prize: Nintendo's new NX system.

Love Splatoon? You could win Nintendo's new NX

The tournaments are called Go4Splatoon, and will be held every week starting this Sunday for six months. Every month the top players will compete with one another in a ranking bracket, and ESL and Nintendo will monitor the results and post them online. At the end of the season the top players will compete for Nintendo's new NX system.

Before you get too excited, I've already combed the ESL website and Go4Splatoon page for any mention or tidbits about Nintendo's NX, and there's zero info. It's possible Nintendo could reveal the NX before the event kicks off on Sunday, but it's also possible the company could wait many months before it's officially unveiled--but Nintendo has promised to reveal the NX sometime this year. One small thing to note is that the NX itself is described as a "video games system" instead of a console, but that's just simple nomenclature.
