Ubisoft lying over The Division player numbers

Anthony Garreffa | Dec 1, 2016 11:39 PM CST

The Division's player base has dive bombed since launch, with a massive 97% drop in players since the peak launch of around 100,000 players - and now, Ubisoft has been caught red handed fluffing The Division's player base numbers.

In a recent interview with GameSpot, Ubisoft's VP of Live Operations, Anne Blondel, said: "Since the release of patch 1.4, we went back to the daily active users we had at launch, because people were [so impressed]". GitHyp on the other hand, adds: "while the numbers have in fact gone up after the latest Survival content update and 50% off sale on Steam, Ubisoft's latest claim doesn't hold up when taking a look at the actual player counts on Steam - which GitHyp has been tracking every hour since The Division's launch".

It's easy to see that The Division's player base numbers are nowhere near the peak numbers during launch, where it was hovering at nearly 100,000 players - there's a definite spike in players, but it's still under 25,000 - a large cry from the launch numbers.

New Mass Effect: Andromeda 4K footage blows us away

Derek Strickland | Dec 1, 2016 11:12 PM CST

BioWare saved the best for last at The Game Awards 2016 by showcasing its new Mass Effect: Andromeda gameplay footage in glorious 4K, introducing us to the next generation of the Mass Effect franchise.

New Mass Effect: Andromeda 4K footage blows us away

While BioWare still hasn't revealed an official release date for Mass Effect: Andromeda, the studio almost did something better by showing off 5-minutes of absolutely incredible gameplay. While the footage was filled with eye-candy, it was also jam-packed with information: we saw the jetpack in action, the new flamethrower hand ability, we saw some Tech Combos in action (yes, combos are still in!), the new environment scanning ability, and got an in-depth look at the fluid combat.

We also saw the new and improved dynamic Galaxy Map, and the extremely minimalist non-combat HUD, which only has a slim compass at the top with on-screen quest indicators.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild gets new gameplay footage

Derek Strickland | Dec 1, 2016 10:05 PM CST

The Game Awards 2016 showcase saw Nintendo reveal two major gameplay trailers for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, showing off the expansive world of Hyrule and dropping some flavor-filled lore.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild gets new gameplay footage

The first trailer was just a 1-minute brief teaser, but the second clip was an entire hands-on gameplay demo of the Wii U version. Of course, Nintendo isn't about to show off the version on its new handheld-hybrid Switch console. Nintendo Treehouse alums Bill Trennen and Nate Bihldorff played through a quick section of the game, showing off some combat, exploration, inventory management, and much more.

While Breath of the Wild looks great, I have to say I'm not impressed by the overall graphics: the grass, for instance, is very jaggy while in motion, even with the distinct trade-offs that Nintendo has made with the cel-shaded graphics.

Shovel Knight getting new prequel Specter of Torment

Specter of Torment isn't an expansion: it's a standalone game that will be "built from the ground up so that it can be a completely unique experience," and features a new character called Specter Knight, who wields an awesome scythe for some reaper-style platformer combat. Specter Knight has all kinds of new unique abilities and attacks, as showcased in the trailer, with all kinds of new bosses and areas to explore.

"Whoah! Did you get everything!? You'll not only play through Specter Knight's own story, but also see new areas, new music, new enemies, new objects, new boss fights, new weapons, new armors, and way, way more than ever before. Prey reboot gets a new futuristic gameplay trailer

Derek Strickland | Dec 1, 2016 9:25 PM CST

Arkane is rebooting Prey, and from what we've seen so far, the game looks pretty damn good: it has creepy psyhological horror, futuristic sci-fi concepts, and surprisingly chaotic FPS action. Now the studio has dropped yet another gameplay trailer for the game, showing off the kind of eerie content that awaits gamers in 2017.

Prey reboot gets a new futuristic gameplay trailer

In fact, Prey isn't actually a reboot or a remake--it's a re-imagining of the series. "Prey is not a sequel, it's not a remake, it has no tie with the original. You have to look at it as a re-imagining of the IP," says Raphael Colantonio, president of Arkane Studios and creative director of Prey.

"Prey isn't just about shooting aliens. It's more of a hybrid game where narratives mix with action and a little bit of an RPG layer. So you have some weapons, but you have lots of other things too, including powers you can learn from the aliens themselves."

Guillermo del Toro, Mads Mikkelsen in Death Stranding

Derek Strickland | Dec 1, 2016 8:26 PM CST

Hideo Kojima finally accepted his Industry Icon award at The Game Awards tonight, and the renowned Japanese dev took the opportunity to show off an amazing new Death Stranding teaser.

Guillermo del Toro, Mads Mikkelsen in Death Stranding

The new Death Stranding teaser trailer clearly showed that Guillermo Del Toro, one of Kojima's most beloved friends and leading horror director, will be feature in the game as a character. We also got our first look at what appears to be the game's sinister antagonist, who is played by the iconic Mads Mikkelsen. So that gives us three major stars joining the cast of Death Stranding: Guillermo Del Toro, Mads Mikkelsen, and Norman Reedus, who plays the principal protagonist.

The footage itself gave us a good look at what to expect from the game, as the black ink appears to be a kind of malefic infection that resurrects the undead. Mikkelsen is apparently a general who leads a platoon of horrible zombie skeletons, and Mikkelsen actually had these weird sparking black tentacles that wriggled everywhere. Keighley affirms that the Death Stranding reveal was running at full 4K on a PlayStation 4 Pro.
