New COVID-19 strains are being detected all around the globe, and now health officials in New York have identified a case of a new strain first detected in South Africa.
According to Governor Andrew Cuomo's Office, the first case of the strain of COVID-19 that was first detected in South Africa has been detected in a Nassau County resident. The new strain of COVID-19 was tested at the Opentrons Labworks Inc's Pandemic Response Lab and later verified at the Wadsworth Center in Albany.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo weighed in on the discovery and said that New Yorkers need to stay vigilant and called on everyone to continue wearing masks and social distance. "We are in a race right now - between our ability to vaccinate and these variants which are actively trying to proliferate - and we will only win that race if we stay smart and disciplined".
