The steps towards vaccinating the majority of the population reached a milestone last week, as a pharmaceutical company announced news about its vaccine's success.
The Food and Drug Administration implemented a threshold for vaccine effectiveness. This threshold forces vaccine companies to create a vaccine that is within this effectiveness threshold, and if the vaccine doesn't reach the required level of effectiveness, it won't be selected for use. Johnson & Johnson has announced that its single-dose vaccine has cleared this threshold.
Additionally, Johnson & Johnson vaccine was found to be 85% effective at prevention severe COVID-19 cases. On top of that, Dr. Mathai Mammen, M.D., Ph.D., the Global Head of Janssen Research & Development, told ABC News, "We're a single shot ... And now we've produced data that say that our vaccine is highly effective, 85% effective against severe COVID, 100% effective against hospitalization or death". The Former FDA Director, Scott Gottlieb said that Johnson & Johnson's vaccine shows sustained growth in immune protection over time.
