India has the second-highest number of coronavirus cases in the world, and now reports are coming out, indicating the country has surpassed 5 million cases in total.
According to the Johns Hopkins coronavirus tracker, India, at the time of writing this, is sitting at 5,020,359 confirmed cases of COVID-19. As for deaths, as many as 80,000 have died with reports saying that there are shortages of intensive care beds and oxygen supplies. More positively, India still has a lower death rate than some other countries despite its caseload.
At the beginning of the pandemic, India implemented strict lockdown measures that kept the virus in decent check, but then the virus made its way into megacities. On top of that, the Indian government has been reducing restrictions in an attempt to recover economically from the early lockdown. In just a week, India added 600,000 new coronavirus cases, and in the last 24 hours, the country added 90,000 new cases.
