HardwareZone jumped the NDA by a few hours and posted the first review of the GeForce 8800 Ultra from Nvidia. However, this has to be the weakest "Ultra" card from Nvidia in its entire history of making graphics cards. The core clock speed is a mere 37MHz faster than the 8800 GTX and Pixel Shader processor has been clocked up another 150MHz. The memory is clocked at 2,160MHz, up 360MHz over the 8800 GTX. Everything else remains the same, except the price tag, as these suckers are priced somewhere between US$850-999, which is an insane amount of cash to pay for a graphics card. Even more so when you consider that you can get overclocked 8800 GTX cards that are just as fast if not faster.
Looking at the benchmarks posted on HardwareZone, the 8800 Ultra has a lead by around 600 point in 3DMark 06. It manages between three and nine frames more than the 8800 GTX in Far Cry and five frames or so more in F.E.A.R. Hardly impressive for a product that costs more than twice as much. It fairs slightly better in Company of Heroes where it manages as much as 18 fps more than the 8800 GTX.
