Facebook is firing all of its cylinders to fight misinformation surrounding the coronavirus COVID-19, and now the platform is providing its users with one simple place to find all validated information.
Facebook has introduced a new feature to its user base. The new feature is called "information center" and is the one place Facebook users can go to receive legitimate coronavirus COVID-19 information. The announcement was made by Mark Zuckerberg in a conference call, and according to Zuckerberg, the idea behind the "information center" is to distribute legitimate information from credible sources such as the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), and WHO (World Health Organization) to Facebook's users.
Here's what Zuckerberg said, "The first fits the theme of encourage more authoritative information, and what we're basically doing is we're -- we've built, in collaboration with a lot of our health partners in these organizations that I mentioned before, a coronavirus information center that we are going to be putting at the top of everyone's Facebook feed."
Zuckerberg continues and says that Facebook will be "rolling this out in a number of places around the U.S. and Europe in the next 24 hours, and then other places -- hopefully more globally over the next -- over the days to come, and the goal here is going to be to put authoritative information from organizations like the CDC and WHO in front of everyone who uses our services, as well as prominent links to the websites of those organizations"
This whole effort by Zuckerberg is to reduce the amount of misinformation that is circulating on both Facebook and Instagram regarding the coronavirus. Instagram is getting a similar treatment with links to the World Health Organization being located front and center on people's feeds. Throughout the conference call, Zuckerberg also states that posts from celebrities and local officials that are encouraging people to cooperate with social distancing will also be included in the information center.
