Japan will stop making VCRs this month

Last company in Japan to produce VCRs will give it up this month.

The home video format that started them all is on its very last legs, at least in Japan: Funai Electric Company is the last Japanese manufacturer to produce VCRs, and as of this month, it will cease making them.

The company cites an unsurprisingly declining market for the devices as well as the difficulty in obtaining parts as the reasons for the decision. Funai's VCRs were made in Chinese factories and sold under the Sanyo name as well as others in North America.

Last year, the company reported 750,000 unit sales.
