Much of the early history of Walt Disney's original animated pre-cursor to Mickey Mouse; Oswald the Rabbit has been lost over the last 80 years, with almost a third of all animated shorts films currently unaccounted for. But in a minor miracle, one of the short films from 1928, 'Sleigh Bells' has been located in a British film archive and restored by the Walt Disney company.
Announcing the find to the world, the British Film Institute noted that the short was discovered by a plucky researcher simply browsing the online catalogue of the BFI National Archive's inventory. In a welcome surprise, the six minute short was located in very good condition and with its original soundtrack completely intact. Disney and BFI have since collaborated to preserve the short in a new digital and photochemical print master.
