Facebook Messenger now has more than 500 million monthly active users, even though many users weren't happy about being forced to download and install the service as a separate app. The No. 1 social networking website currently has 1.35 billion monthly active users, and wants to continue growing the number of Messenger users - and hopes to reach 1 billion next.
Active Messenger user figures increased 150 percent in one year - which was largely due to it being mandatory on smartphones.
The effort has angered some Facebook users, and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently explained his company's reasoning: "On mobile, each app really can focus on doing one thing well, we think. You're probably messaging people 15, 20 times a day, and having to go into an app and wait for it to load and then go through a bunch of steps to get to your messages or send a message is a lot of friction."
