Yesterday up in hot and smoggy Sydney we attended a first ever Australian press conference by nVidia presented by the interesting and insightful nVidia Chief Scientist, Dr. David Kirk. The short conference, held at the Four Seasons hotel at The Rocks, was fairly interesting but really only recapped what we already knew about nVidia's future plans and what they predict for the future in the graphics industry. I thought some of you people might like to hear what we heard, so here goes.

We and the rest of the Australian print media contingent saw an nForce 2 based system with GeForce FX 5800 Ultra and its modified firmware wiping off what nVidia claim to be 7db of sound. Even with the sides of the case off, when the card switched into 3D mode there is no doubting the FX Flow system is loud - However, it was our general belief that various media outlets made more out of the scenario than was required. When asking about the company only fulfilling pre-orders of the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra, we were swiftly told they do not respond to rumours or products that are unannounced, which quickly cancelled out the possibility of finding out anything about the NV35 and other future products, which I guess is fair enough.

On the graphical development side of things, Dr. Kirk reckons GPU speeds are doubling every 15 months and will continue to do so for another 10 - 15 years, at which stage they will have completely developed life-like computer graphics. When a writer from one of the Australian magazines attending talked about the facial emotions when killing someone with a BFG, Dr. Kirk suggested instead we may start to see games where we spend more time trying to hurt the feelings and emotions of another character, rather than blowing his or hers guts out. I thought this was a very interesting comment and spent quite a bit of time pondering it afterwards - FPS fans make the most of your shoot'em up games as we could see emotion-bashing games like these take over in no time.
