Instagram, ever heard of it? Yeah, neither have I. But apparently it's this really cool photo-taking and sharing app that is taking iOS and Android users by storm. Just 10 days ago they were at 30 million users. Then its Android version launched and all bets were off. They gained roughly 1,000,000 new users a day since the launch.
Shortly after the launch, Facebook announced its acquisition of Instagram for $1 billion. This gained the app wide publicity from our news posts all the way up to it being covered on The Daily Show. Instagram has just over 40,000,000 users, or roughly 5% of Facebook's active users. It took Facebook four years to reach 100 million and it looks like Instagram is on track to beat this.
The nice thing about all of the timing of this is that it shows that Android users can't be ignored by app developers. Most of the new users probably came from the news of the acquisition and Android users going onto Google Play and downloading it like it had always been there. But, I'm sure plenty of users were waiting with baited breathe for the launch.
